View Full Version : Camera Sling That doesn't tie up the plate thread?

So yea, I'm shooting handheld a lot these days, but then at times, I'm mounting to tripod/monopod/slider. I'd like one of those slings the togs use for security. Strap goes round shoulder/neck, the camera hangs at the hip.

Problem is all the slings i've seen connect via the plate thread on the bottom of the camera.

I don't want to have to unscrew and attach a plate for mounting.

Does anyone know of a sling that allows a mount plate to be attached also??

I"m using a b-grip beltholder and a b-grip universal tripod adapter for that purpose.

Hi Clive,

Many QR plates, certainly Manfrotto ones, attach to the tripod or whatever by a standard 1/4" thread, so you should be able to attach one to a sling with no problem.

I think there is some confusion - I'll try to explain better.

The slings normally attach to the cameras bottom thread. Like this.

But I need this thread since it's where my plate attaches too for mounting on tripods etc...

Clive, you are missing the point. QR plate adaptors come in two parts, the top bit that fits to the camera by the usual 1/4" screw and the bottom bit that has a 1/4" threaded hole and attaches to the support by the 1/4" screw the camera normally attaches by, like this one for example, Quick Release Plate Adapter 394 - Plate Adapters | Manfrotto (http://www.manfrotto.co.uk/quick-release-plate-adapter)

The idea is, you fit a bottom plate to (say) your tripod, another bottom plate to your sling and a top plate to your camera. You swap the camera from sling to tripod by the flick of a lever. Simple.

Op Tech makes sling adapters that use their normal QR attachments on the normal strap lugs. Might look at their line. They even have a "gunslinger" double harness!

I understand the dilemma - handheld gives you freedom, but sometimes you need or want to go on (or off) a rig, be it shoulder mount, monopod, slider, steadicam... If you use one of the Op Tech straps, you can select from various QR ends, various strap configurations, and still put a QR plate in the normal tripod hole on the bottom of the camera to fit your rigs.

Thanks Dave (Blackhurst) - will take a look!

Dave (Baker) - Cheers for clearing that up - makes sense and could be an option!
