A friend has got an Olympus LC-5 recorder and wants to get a microphone to record bird song and calls onto it (it has a 3.5mm mike input). Any suggestions?

You'll have good help there by audio professionals. I think a quality field stereo microphone with 3.5mm connection is the answer.
