View Full Version : Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording
Bruce Dempsey July 3rd, 2014, 05:03 AM Shoot less and more selectively. Save only whatever 4K turns out good enough to have value at that resolution. Down-convert the rest.
For "cinema' cameraman that will work however when filming 3 day a figureskating competition or a bunch of 3 hour convocation videos there is no discretionary shooting. You must get it all and no mistakes or retakes. Consequently archiving a single competition which might have involved 100gb shot at 1440x1082i 16bitrate will now be near tb or more so it adds up over the years.
(note to self: must try to resell some of that old footage as the participants or their kin might be re-interested in footage of themselves from 10yrs ago)
Bruce Dempsey July 3rd, 2014, 09:06 AM Sony RX10 versus Panasonic FZ1000 (http://www.imaging-resource.com/cameras/sony/rx10/vs/panasonic/fz1000/)
Bruce Dempsey July 4th, 2014, 05:34 AM The Seiki 39 arrived this morning a full 3 weeks ahead of the fz1000 ...going to make the wait even harder
Say ...did anyone notice the 300 dollar price drop on the other cam. Makes you wonder if they might have been gouging just a bit.. Watch that backlash if I know anything about public relations,
Steve Struthers July 4th, 2014, 05:51 AM Yeah, I noticed the price drop too when I visited the B&H website - the Sony RX10 is now selling for $999 (about $1250 in Canadian dollars at current exchange rates).
Gouging? Sony always gouge whenever they can get away with it. It looks like Canadian retailers haven't got wind of the Panasonic FZ1000 yet, because they're still asking $1300 to $1500 for it ($1100 to $1300 USD). Or they're just playing dumb. Canadian retailers are particularly notorious for gouging consumers, because they demand at least half again what stuff sells for in the US, even when the dollar is trading at par.
The RZ10 looks like a fantastic camera, but what happens if you need a telephoto length longer than 200mm? And you can't shoot any wider than 24mm because the lens is fixed.
Ken Ross July 5th, 2014, 09:02 AM Steve, Sony does not have a lock on 'price gouging'. If you're equating price gouging with the price that early adopters pay, well, nobody is forcing anyone to buy products upon their initial release.
Panasonic, Canon, all of them do the same thing. There's nothing unique about Sony's approach.
Bruce Dempsey July 7th, 2014, 03:36 AM 4k I calculate 52 minutes on a 64gb card but i'm unsure
Hoping Panasonic will surprise me by releasing the camera earlier than previously projected lol
Noa Put July 7th, 2014, 04:41 AM I can record 1 hour and 25 minutes of 100mbs 4K onto a 64gb card on my gh4, weird thing is though the camera only uses 49gb of the card and then says it's full while according to windows explorer there is still 10gb available.
Bruce Dempsey July 7th, 2014, 05:16 AM just a wild guess but that 10gb might be the pagefile backup area from which recovery is possible
but I have no idea really
Phil Goetz July 14th, 2014, 09:38 AM ETA end of the month. Do you have a pre-order in?
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000K (http://www.omegabroadcast.com/product-p/pan-dmcfz1000k-90-4980.htm)
Bruce Dempsey July 17th, 2014, 05:47 AM Estimated Ship Date: 1 - 3 business days
As found on the Panasonic/Shop page for this camera.
Maybe should have pre-ordered there instead of NYC. I just thought Panasonic would take care of their dealers first. my bad
Darren Levine July 17th, 2014, 06:54 AM has anyone seen if there are separate pal/ntsc versions, or that it's switchable in camera?
Jurij Turnsek July 17th, 2014, 08:32 AM Has anyone done a detailed comparison between Panasonic Lumix GH4 + 14-140/4-5,8 lens and FZ1000? Is the price difference justified (I am not bothered by the missing telephoto range)?
Noa Put July 17th, 2014, 10:08 AM Beside the fact that both can do 4k internally they are 2 different camera's, in 4K mode the fz1000 crops considerable starting at 37mm I think which is not wide at all and practically not usable for many. It would be a great camera for a more telephoto range but it still remains to be seen how the low light capability of this camera is.
The lens you are refering to I have as well and while it's a great allround lens I find it unusable inside when it gets too dark, but the advantage of a GH4 is that you can put on a lens that can cope under these circumstances while with the fz1000 you are stuck with what the lens offers you.
Aldo Erdic July 18th, 2014, 02:17 PM Regarding the 30 minute recording limit: Once the camera stops recording at the 30 minute mark, how long is the wait before you can start recording again? Is it a matter of waiting for the camera to cool down?
Bruce Dempsey July 18th, 2014, 02:59 PM Can't say for sure as I don't have one yet but other cameras you might lose a second or two but that's all
Bruce Dempsey July 20th, 2014, 05:57 AM Been mulling over the implications of the less than ideal wide end (37mm) of the Leica lens when in 4K mode on the fz1000 and imagining some shots that I typically need.
I came across this statement from Red Cameras in "Quotes" below and I'm beginning to understand now that what I first thought was a handicap may in fact assist in acquiring crisp video in 4K mode
"A higher crop factor means a given lens will appear as if it were a longer focal length, and at the same subject magnification, that lens will also have more depth of field. "
In the run and gun world where re-takes don't happen, a sufficiently deep depth of field is essential because most anything other than an out of focus issue can be adjusted in post.
am I right?
Ken Ross July 20th, 2014, 07:27 AM Everything is relative, Bruce. Even if you have a slightly greater DOF, what is that relative to? Is it relative to this same camera if the entire sensor was scanned? If you take a competitor like the AX100, having enough DOF will rarely be an issue and I see little advantage for the Panasonic in those terms.
However for those times when you want a shallower DOF (and those do occur), it will be more difficult with the Panasonic as opposed to the Sony.
Frankly, I think Sony's approach to scanning the entire sensor has proved very successful in both the AX100 and the RX10. I think there are always sacrifices made when only a portion of the sensor is used.
Bruce Dempsey July 20th, 2014, 07:30 AM Ken I'm really not trying to prove anything but I did invite comment
just musings
Noa Put July 20th, 2014, 08:14 AM I did expect some more shallow dof on the ax100 but it ramps quickly to f4 once you start to zoom in, my rx10 performs much better in that respect and I prefer using that camera for talking heads that are shot from a distance. In terms of focussing I prefer the ax100 again because I have had 2 weddings already where I was slightly of with the rx10 on focus and didn't notice that during recording. The fz1000 should have that advantage as well of having a deeper dof?
Ken Ross July 20th, 2014, 08:25 AM Ken I'm really not trying to prove anything but I did invite comment
just musings
Don't get me wrong Bruce, I wasn't trying to pit one camera against the other. I was just trying to show the pros & cons of both approaches (full sensor readout vs partial)
Bruce Dempsey July 20th, 2014, 08:54 AM copy-that Ken
love using the grid on my trusty cx550v...whatever is in the centre rectangle is in focus...period
I'm getting variable results with this new-fangled tracking focus/subject focus. When there is no time whatsoever except for pointing and shooting, I'd like the subject matter which will be in the centre of the image to be in-focus and the likelehood of that happening diminishes as sensor readout size increases. Therefore for video purposes smaller can be better. 4K is so precise and so demanding of image quality that any optically induced softness will be painfully apparent
I don't know if that is the reason the engineers of the fz1000 chose to use the high crop factor 2.7 (or something like that) when shooting 4K mode or if it is some technical reason beyond my scope of understanding these things (would not need to be to esoteric to be out of my scope lol)
Bruce Dempsey July 20th, 2014, 04:13 PM The FZ1000 is now officially shipping in Japan through Amazon JP or Japanese eBay

Glen Pinno July 21st, 2014, 01:57 AM Hi everyone, so far i am keen on this new FZ1000 to replace my SDT750, but it will not be here in Australia for quite some time, and i think it is going to be at least $1200 or more based on current trends where we Australians are being ripped off with all our electronics gear compared to the rest of the world, so i may end up ordering one from USA if i eventually decide to grab one.
Another reason for going with one from USA is because i shoot all my current video in 1080/50p avchd and the FZ1000 only shoots 4k at 25fps, so getting the US version i can at least get that up to 30fps (not that it will make much difference)
Anyway, i found a hands on review and the guy in the review pointed out the rather noisy lens when he was shooting video and zooming the lens in and out.
Does anyone here know if this is indeed correct, and has the RX10 got the same problem.
the reference to the noisy lens is in this video link is at the 3.20 mark.

Noa Put July 21st, 2014, 05:20 AM You live in pal country so you should get a pal capable camera, you might run into issues with flickering lights when shooting indoor if you use a 30p camera only.
The zoom of the rx10 can be heared while zooming but it's fairly silent, the zoomspeed during record however is ridiculously slow, takes about 13 seconds to go from wide to tele.
Phil Goetz July 21st, 2014, 09:19 AM In the video TCSTV's Chris Niccolls refers to the camera as the "F zed 1000". Makes it easier to understand. Where did this trend come from to state the letter "Z" as "Zed"? First person I heard do it was Alister Chapman.
Glen Pinno July 21st, 2014, 10:01 AM "In the video TCSTV's Chris Niccolls refers to the camera as the "F zed 1000". Makes it easier to understand. Where did this trend come from to state the letter "Z" as "Zed"? First person I heard do it was Alister Chapman."
But the letter "Z" is pronounced "Zed", at least here in Australia that's how we say it.
W = Double U
X = Ex
Y = Why
Z = Zed
I believe some pronounce it as "Zee" but to me that doesn't sound right.
Bruce Dempsey July 21st, 2014, 10:08 AM canucks say zed as well...this one in any case
zee zee top is pronounced correctly
tomato tomatto
Alister Chapman July 22nd, 2014, 04:45 AM It's our North American cousins that miss-pronounce Z as Zee. The rest of the world is Zed. ;-)
It is easily proven that it is North America that has it wrong. A zeppelin is obviously a zeppelin, not a zee-ppelin, a zipper is a zipper, not a zee-pper. In most of the world a zebra is a zeb-ra, except the USA where it gets turned into a zee-bra. ;-)
Darren Levine July 22nd, 2014, 06:33 AM save the inevitable argument, read this one here: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080224080837AAdS7HH
Dave Blackhurst July 22nd, 2014, 02:22 PM don't even try to justify "haitcH"... or "AitcH"!
Yeah that's "H" to us US folk...
John McCully July 22nd, 2014, 02:36 PM And in Canada 'out' is pronounced 'oat' while here in New Zealand 'Zealand' is pronounced 'Zillin' and Hakatere is pronounced Hakatree.
Wot's it madda...

Canada is such a huge place geographically that there are quite a few accents and even completely different languages, btw thats a cool way to pronounce Zillin and I have to squint real hard to make out whats being said. You waiting on a fz1000?

Glen Pinno July 30th, 2014, 08:45 AM So is the FZ1000 worth the $$$
I like it from what i have seen, maybe not perfect, but i wanted to upgrade to a better, traditional style fixed lens camera than i have now, and i dont generally like DSLR type cameras for video because they are pricks of things to hold, however, i mount my camera on my small custom made hand held rigs or my monopod, so i figured it wont really matter now, and this camera does have the pivoting screen.
What i do want is to continue shooting my videos at 50p over 25p, so i am happy to do this in 1080, which the FZ1000 does do, and i need Auto Focus and and Image Stabilization built in, which this camera also has.
The 4k is a bonus, but only available in 25p, but thats fine, i will deal with that by altering my shooting style.
Cheers.
You live in pal country so you should get a pal capable camera, you might run into issues with flickering lights when shooting indoor if you use a 30p camera only.
Say what, you have me stumped here, why would i have issues with flickering lights if i buy an ntsc camera that shoots 30p ?
Cheers
Phil Goetz July 30th, 2014, 04:49 PM Check out a timelapse video
I set the camera to aperture priority, F8.0, shade white balance, ISO 125, and 1 photo every 15 seconds. I resized the photos to 1920 x 1080 in Photoshop. There were about 300 of them. Originals were 5MB and photoshopped were 600kb or so.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000K (http://www.omegabroadcast.com/product-p/pan-dmcfz1000k-90-4980.htm)
Get them before they are gone!
Glen Pinno July 30th, 2014, 05:53 PM No shipping to Australia i notice, because we cant get these just yet.
Will see if B & H has them, and will ship to australia, i am sure they do.
Darren Levine July 30th, 2014, 08:39 PM so, where can one order a PAL version of this and have it shipped to the US?
Bruce Dempsey August 1st, 2014, 08:01 AM fz1000 arrived this morning and 2 issues
1st the libec 3dv Does Not work to control the zoom so if no other panhandle zoom controller will work It won't be a keeper
2nd the bestbatt ac continuous power supply doesn't work either even though the part number is correct. Another dealbeaker as I shoot for hours on end in frozen arenas where battery power doesn't cut it
Maybe not so hot a video camera afterall
David Dixon August 1st, 2014, 11:41 AM I've read that in the slow motion mode audio is disabled. But now I've also read that zooming is disabled – is this true?
Bruce Dempsey August 1st, 2014, 01:19 PM Bruce,
same here. If you go to DPReview check the preview of the camera, go to the third page and look at the picture of the ports, there is a micro HDMI, USB and remote -looks exactly like the one on the GH4, which is a 2.5mm). I am 98% confident that a libec 3DV will at least control the zoom.
Libec 3dv does not function in any way with the fz1000. bummer forsure.but a camera without proper panhandle zoom has got to go back :(
Returned it bummer
Phil Goetz August 1st, 2014, 01:21 PM David - there is time lapse which is still images and there is no audio but I don't think there are high speed frame rates. Typically variable speed rates have NO audio on cameras. I think...
David Dixon August 1st, 2014, 01:41 PM Sorry, I'm speaking specifically of the high frame rate options.
I've read that the FZ1000 does:
120fps @ 1080p
240fps @ 720p
360fps @ 640x480
However, I've now read that this is not correct. So, does the U.S version offer these frame rates?
I've read that in these modes no audio is recorded - I can live with that.
But I've also just read that in these modes lens zooming is also disabled. Can anyone verify that?
Thanks!
David Dixon August 1st, 2014, 10:51 PM OK, found my answers (partly) in the Advanced Manual online.
I don't know about the multiple high frame rate options, but I did find out that in slow motion mode focus, zoom, exposure, and white balance are locked in when you start recording each clip.
Phil Goetz August 4th, 2014, 09:02 PM Biggest gotcha when unboxing the camera:
The hood and lens cap ARE NOT INSTALLED. That surprised me.
Aldo Erdic August 21st, 2014, 08:36 AM I just got the camera this week and am thoroughly satisfied. I was going to get the GH 4 but it's nice to be going back to carrying just a camera and no extra lenses. The low light performance, manual controls, focus peaking, zebras and decent DOF are good enough for my uses. Oh, the 30 minute recording limit is no big deal: the camera doesn't overheat so you just begin recording again after a couple of seconds of the camera reaching the 30 minute mark.
One set back: I recorded a 35 minute video (4K mp4) but the camera breaks it up in 4 gig chunks every 6 minutes. With AVCHD footage, I use Sony Vegas' Device Explorer to join the 4 gig segments together. Unfortunately, that route doesn't work with the 4K mp4 files. I captured the files with the supplied Panasonic software but it too doesn't join the segments together.
Any suggestions on alternatives to joining the 4 gig segments together?
Aldo Erdic August 21st, 2014, 10:15 AM ....nevermind.....I was testing it with one 4 gig clip at a time. When I drag in the entire group of clips at once, Vegas automatically generates a transition between each clip and plays the entire event ok. So all is good!
Ronald Jackson August 27th, 2014, 01:02 AM I've been looking at the Panasonic sales leaflet (with the help of a magnifying glass).
It seems to say or imply that there is no image stabilisation ("O.I.S.") when the camera is in 4K mode.
Is this so? Important facility for me who would tend to use the camera hand held at the longer end of the zoom range.
Ron
