I purchased a GH4, and am hoping to trim and archive the high-bitrate .MOVs without transcoding to an intermediate format. Is anyone doing something similar, and if so, what are you using (any platform)?

Or do folks shooting the GH3/4 end up transcoding anyway?

I currently own both Edius 6.5 and Premiere Pro CS 5.5, but neither trims these clips reliably or at all. So before upgrading either...or neither...I'd like to know what others typically use.

(As a test, I installed the trial of Premiere Pro CC (Windows 7) and dropped in 100 and 200mbps 1080/60p clips from the GH4. Unfortunately, the Project Manager's "Create New Trimmed Project" seems unable to trim either type of footage...it just spits a copy of the entire file to the new "Trimmed Project" directory.)

Kris, you can trim the GH4 .mov clips with mpeg streamclip. It is a free utility and will not re-encode the clip. Open the clip in this utility, enter your in and out points, hit trim then save as.

If you are working on a Mac, QuickTime Player will allow you to trim clips: edit/trim then save the desired portion with a new name. You can save as many portions as desired.

Aperture will allow you to archieve the saved clips into it's library. Lightroom will not recognize the saved portions for importing into it.
