Hi Everyone.

I've been lusting after a SD 552 but I happened on something that I thought I just overlooked.

The 552 apparently does not have a USB plug that you could hook up to a computer and retrieve audio files from the card on the mixer.

To further complicate things, the SD card is located on the bottom of the unit, which in a regular audio case set-up with wires and transmitters and so-on, makes getting to the card itself a challenge!

Am I missing something? My Marantz PDM 660 even has a USB port to transfer files.

Most of SD's 'recorder's' have the card slot on the bottom and a Firewire connection on the side
The PortaBrace case for the 552 has an access flap. I would assume the Petrol case would as well.
The 552's intended usage is a mixer. According to SD, the 2 trk. recorder was 'intended' for backup purposes.

Hi Rick,

Well for "back up" purposes that 24 bit audio from the 552 would sure be my choice rather than a scratch track from the camera.

But there is no FireWire connector on the 552 either!

So even though the 552 has what seems to be a very decent recorder built in, are sound guys still using an external recorder hooked up to the SD?

That doesn't make much sense.

Yup... unless you have a bag that has a flap on the bottom you basically have to pull all the wires out to access the SD card slot.
