I was wondering if you could help me. My editing skills are a little rusty to say the least as I’ve been out of the game for a few years now. Previously I used to edit on a Window Machine (Vista) with Vegas Pro 8. It handled files from my EX-3 and nanoFlash with ease. I didn’t relish the upgrade to Win8 when my old machine died so purchased a Macbook Pro. At the time I didn’t think I’ll be editing video again.

So would my Macbook Pro with a Retina Display edit video files? Most likely it’ll be from a DSLR (not sure which one yet).

The spec is as follows:

• 2.7GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz
• 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
• 512GB Flash Storage

I am looking to get Final Cut Pro X. That aside what else would you recommend in terms of both hardware and software?

I do have an External Hard Drive - Buffalo 1TB Ministation Thunderbolt Hard Drive. I was thinking this could be my video drive?

Any help, advice or thoughts are great appreciated.
Cheers!

Sounds like you'll be MORE than ready to go! The Retina MBP is a sweet machine that will cut through your footage like butter. Have fun.

Can recommend Lumix GH3 as a video DSLR Paul. Will take Nikkors via an adaptor. Mine is from Novoflex.

My Retina MBP handles FCPX okay. I also use a monitor and a external hard drive.

Thanks Ronald! :) A large monitor is something I am considering. I already have an External Hard Drive that I can hook up via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt.

Thanks for the Camera suggestion. The GH3 was high on my list until I decided over New Year to take a look at the Canon XA-20. I think this would be easier for me to achieve the results I need to complete the documentary.

Happy New year!
