A friend advised me, and I confirmed myself today, that using a ND fader filter on a lens in ETC mode results in a degraded image. Not surprising really. Glad I only purchased a cheapo step down ring to use my existing fader (Genus Eclipse) rather get a new dedicated filter.

Why does the filter make the image degraded? Isn't that just because of the ETC mode?

Exactly! Without ETC no problem, with, image degradation.
