Would like to archive some original audio recordings and was told it would be best to use lossless compression.

Did some searching and Free FLAC FLAC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC) seems to have a lot of support.

Am interested in the experience of others who have tested the various alternatives and have a preference.

Thanks

ThanksFLAC is good but why bother with any compression at all? Memory and storage is cheaper than dirt these days. Uncompressed broadcast WAV would be the way I'd go.

Yes, as Steve stated, memory is so inexpensive these days that an uncompressed format is probably the best choice.. and a few years down the road, who knows the availability of this years 'favorite codec' .
If the files are mono (spoken word only for instance) , a PCM 2-trk, (WAVE or AIFF) can be halved by making it single track mono.
