Would it not be nice if there was some kind of small gadget that would plug straight into the HD SDI out on the Canon that would convert the stream into an HDCAM or DVPROHD codec so it could be streamed right onto a small portable hardrive?

That would sure make the decision between the XLH1 and HVX200 easier for me.

Something like that would be handy, to some degree.

Recording to HDCAM would be very limiting -- there's only one NLE on the market (Sony's pricey XPRI system) that can edit native HDCAM. DVCPRO-HD is a lot more editable, but -- why go through those hoops when you could just get an HVX and record DVCPRO-HD directly?

Instead I'd like to see them take it a step further -- make the box incorporate a next-gen codec, like JPEG2000 or H.264 or Avid's HD codec or something like that. Now THAT would make for something very, very interesting!

I think the Avid DNxHd codec would be the best for the job

Cineform gets my vote. It's an absolutely lovely format to work with.

Going back to HDCAM, I saw someone editing it on FCP or least that's what they said they were doing, presumably then it was it had been converted to another codec.

Technically what would we need in nuts and bolts to create a small plug-in encoder. How small could it feasibly be?

I believe Avid said that the DNxHD codec could be upgraded in both quality and compression rates as the the market dictated.
