View Full Version : MK III terrible artifacts in video
John Carrithers February 18th, 2013, 12:53 AM I've been using a MK II for the better part of 3 years. I just picked up a MKIII. Most of my shooting only requires short clips. Friday I had a shoot that required longer record times. Every clip that I recorded over 5 minutes and 40 seconds has artifacts like the attached image. The sound is still there. Treasured is able to restore it. However, I'd like to isolate the problem and figure out a way around it.
As a test I put a different CF card in the MKIII. The same result happened. At 5:41 and on, the rest of the video was all artifacts. I also put the original card that I noticed the problem on in my MKII and recorded a long clip. There was no artifacts.
Any ideas?

Dave Partington February 18th, 2013, 06:50 AM I'd be thinking of returning it. None of our mk3 bodies do this.

Sabyasachi Patra February 25th, 2013, 10:58 PM Do you see the same thing in the LCD while recording? I guess your camera needs to be returned.
Trevor Dennis February 26th, 2013, 03:43 PM John, does the camera have the original firmware? Just thinking that a bad installation of something like Magic Lantern might be driving this.
Do you see the problem when playing back the clips in camera, or only on the computer monitor. If the latter, then maybe a graphics card driver issue, but I wouldn't have thought that would only show on clips of a certain size or greater.
Have you tried different resolutions and frame rates? If I had to guess, I'd say corrupted files. You say you have tried different cards. What were those cards, and were they formatted in the camera or on the computer. Sorry to ask obvious questions, but you just never know.

Mine are only happening for a frame at a time but are happening to almost every clip regardless of duration and card use.
I'd love to know if you or anyone has gotten to the bottom of this...
Scott Hutchcroft March 5th, 2013, 04:29 PM That really sucks. I would be PO'd. Pretty sure it is the camera, maybe try re-installing the firmware.
John Hewat March 5th, 2013, 04:32 PM I'm extremely PO'd. I've got too much work coming up to be without the camera but can't really risk doing the work with this camera.
I've contacted my local repair centre and am awaiting their response about what they think. But if everyone here is right then it sounds like I'm gonna have to return it...
Another video producer I know said it looks like "data corruption of some sort. Dropped packet data. I've seen it before on downloaded movies from the net." If that's the case, could it be the card??
John Hewat March 5th, 2013, 11:00 PM Response from the Melbourne service centre (spelling mistakes included):
"The faulty is a corruption: cane be caused by a card or camera.
Theses sensor or the main board can produce this fault or a faulty card.
Try a new card first and see how that goes.
If a new card does not work the camera will have to go to Canon Sydney"
So if it's the card, fine. If not, bad news. Especially since I bought it in Hong Kong...
John Hewat March 6th, 2013, 04:42 AM Ok, so I'm confused.
As I started ploughing through all my footage from all cards to see if I could find other footage affected, I could not find one example.
Which initially made me think it was just the card.
Then I got to the footage that had been affected when I had (repeatedly) viewed it last night.
Tonight though, no problems!!!
All clips played perfectly!
I just don't understand it! Does that suggest some problem with my MacBookPro??
