View Full Version : Next Challenge Dale Guthormsen February 10th, 2013, 07:27 PM Was wondering when the next challenge is going to be anounced. dale Trond Saetre February 11th, 2013, 08:17 AM Hi Dale, According to the UWOL Challenge rules, the next challenge is supposed to begin March 1. So I believe the signup will be open during last week of February. 1. Timings – The UWOL Challenge will run 4 times per year: March, June, September, plus the annual DVC/UWOL Charity Challenge every December. With the exception of the varying dates and rules of the charity challenge, each one will begin on the 1st of the month. A sign-up thread will be posted on DV Info Net in the UWOL forum one week before the challenge begins. 3. Contest Topic – On the first of the month, a theme will be posted into a new thread on the UWOL forum at DV Info Net. Good to see I'm not the only one ready for the next round. :) Chris Hurd February 11th, 2013, 08:27 AM I don't know that it'll be exactly on March 1st, but we'll certainly shoot for that date! Trond Saetre February 11th, 2013, 08:36 AM Thanks, Chris! Marj Atkins February 12th, 2013, 06:39 AM I don't know that it'll be exactly on March 1st, but we'll certainly shoot for that date! That would be perfect! - Start on a Friday and upload on a Sunday! :) A full month with five weekends! Trond Saetre February 13th, 2013, 08:58 AM I agree with Marj. The number of finished entries are pretty low already, compared to how many sign-ups we have. To have a full month and 4-5 weekends, would probably let more participants find time to complete their films. Mike Sims February 13th, 2013, 09:52 AM Good point. We should all really make an effort to leverage the milestone of UC25 into a better turnout. Trond Saetre February 13th, 2013, 11:55 AM I agree, Mike. It's about time to come up with ideas how we can have more participants finish their entries, like we used to have some years ago. More weekends available is probably one way to do it. I really like Marj's idea, especially since we now only have 4 challenges a year, compared to 6/year earlier. Marj Atkins February 13th, 2013, 11:26 PM To have a full month and 4-5 weekends, would probably let more participants find time to complete their films. It's not often that the first day lands on a Friday and the last day on a Sunday and it's not often that there are five weekends but March has - this year. June and September are fortunately also quite close to this. Nice for working folk. The Easter weekend falls at the end of March this year so everyone has Monday off too - okay I know that is pushing our luck! The Easter weekend falls at the end of March this year so everyone has Monday off too - okay I know that is pushing our luck! I hear you on this one, Marj. Let's push our luck, and hope for many participants. Have got a new toy that I want to try in this round. A DJI Phantom with GoPro Hero 3 After an indoor test, where I broke a vase and scared the tail of the cat, I was chased out the door. My wife says that indoor flying is not wise to do. And I have to agree on that one. Hope everyone is doing fine- out there. Markus Nord February 14th, 2013, 03:09 AM Sweet stuff GI! a new toy.... My new toy is on its way too. A new housing for my 5DIII and during March I’ll go up to the mountains for a cave expedition… This will be the first time the expedition date will match UWOL challenge… Geir Inge February 14th, 2013, 08:10 AM Sweet stuff GI! a new toy.... A new housing for my 5DIII and during March I’ll go up to the mountains for a cave expedition… This will be the first time the expedition date will match UWOL challenge… Toys are fun Markus :) Congrats on yours. Here's my first outdoor flight in the backyard of my house. Test flight DJI-Phantom with Gopro on Vimeo Mike Sims February 14th, 2013, 11:17 AM You are very brave to leave the camera running on your first flights! Lucky to have some soft snow for crashes- around here you’d be landing on dirt baked rock-hard by the sun. Good-luck, keep practicing. We’re all looking forward to some great shots now! Geir Inge February 14th, 2013, 02:51 PM . . . We’re all looking forward to some great shots now! Haha, silly me - now I might have set a precedent too high? Well, I'm now deep in practice mode ;) The Phantom can be controlled by means of satellites. It also has an auto function for landing and come back "home", with the help of satellites. A very handsome and smart feature for beginners. Marj Atkins February 14th, 2013, 11:54 PM Toys for boys!! :) Look forward to seeing your results Geir. A word of warning (not that I think you will do this) - keep this away from buildings and people!! http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/open-dv-discussion/511811-microcopter-crash.html Edit - Seems like the video in question has been removed. It showed some guys flying a quadcopter in a city centre. It crashed into a building and came tumbling down (on fire) into the busy street. Marj Atkins February 15th, 2013, 01:25 PM Incidentally Geir - I share your interest in this because my son has been busy constructing one of these quadcopters over the past few months. (He's an electrical engineer.) I can't wait to get some footage from this but, unlike you, I won't be piloting this one! My one ambition is to get some footage of a field of sunflowers for my long-form film! :) I like the fact that he has built in sensors all round so it will turn direction if it senses something in its path. Look forward to seeing how you do. Trond Saetre February 15th, 2013, 02:07 PM Very cool, Geir Inge. I look forward to more aerial shots from you. Bryce Comer February 15th, 2013, 07:41 PM Wow Geir, That's awesome! I have been looking at getting something like this for a while now, but have been a little reluctant to pull the trigger due to never having flown one. However, this one looks like it gives you a bit of help. Would you say it was easy to fly & have you flown something like this before? Regards, Bryce. P.S. i too am looking forward to the next challenge, & will be putting more effort in to finish it! Geir Inge February 16th, 2013, 03:01 AM Hey Bryce nice to hear from you. I've never flown a quadro copter before, so I was a little anxious about what would happen. It's been terrific and the DJI have some good training videos on their websites. You should check it out :) In Norway the DJI Phantom + GoPro Hero3 Black edition, costs around 1700 USD. It is stable and once you've tried a few trips, you will be fine. Flying time of battery is around 10 - 15 minutes. I have ordered e few extra batteries ;) Looking forward for you to join the next round. Bryce Comer February 16th, 2013, 10:57 AM Hi Geir, Thanks for the info. I checked it out after reading your first post about it. It really looks good! Are you getting nice stable images with it? Images that don't need any work in post to correct for shaky footage? Extra batteries would be a must i would imagine but they are cheap, so i would definitely buy a couple of extras. Well good luck with the flying & have lots of fun with it. Hope to see some more footage from it soon. Regards, Bryce Dale Guthormsen February 18th, 2013, 03:14 PM Geir, Finally one that is affordable to most normal mortals!! I immediately went and looked it up. I may sell one of my cameras and get a system to use with my long form videos!!!! Look forward toi seeing your footage!!!! Lorinda Norton February 19th, 2013, 12:47 PM Hey, all you nature-loving, Under Water Over Land video makers! Watch for the sign-up this Friday and, yes, we're running it from March 1 to March 31. Happy 25th to the UWOL Challenge!! Trond Saetre February 19th, 2013, 12:51 PM Yay, can't wait. You and me both, Dale. I also had to look up Geir Inge's new toy. :) Marj Atkins February 19th, 2013, 12:56 PM That's fantastic Lorinda! Thank you! Lots of time to complete this one. Lorinda Norton February 19th, 2013, 01:00 PM Oops...typo already!! I meant to say it will end on April 1 because of Easter. :) Bob Thieda February 19th, 2013, 01:36 PM Great news....I HAVE to get back in this game...I miss it so. Geir Inge February 19th, 2013, 04:47 PM Happy to hear from you Lorinda, a new challenge and with some extra time is great :) Bryce: I have upgraded the test flight and it's filmed in 1080:50i (pal system), no editing at all. I would not recommend using it in the rain / snow, or very strong winds, though :) Dale: You just got to have one of these little handy toys ;) and it's easy to maneuver too, even for a silly old chap like me :) Hope to see you all in the next round. Mike Sims February 19th, 2013, 06:45 PM I’m glad it won’t end on Easter because my rabbit friend Toby from UC24 would never forgive me, but end on April 1- really? We’re going to end on All Fools Day? Does this mean we can just ignore the theme and end with a credit that says “APRIL FOOL!”? ;) Bryce Comer February 19th, 2013, 07:30 PM Thanks Lorinda, Looking forward to this one! Geir, That looks great. I certainly think one of these is on my list of things to buy! Thanks. Trond Saetre February 20th, 2013, 07:55 AM I’m glad it won’t end on Easter because my rabbit friend Toby from UC24 would never forgive me, but end on April 1- really?
