4K on 1/3'' seems to be the overall perception right now for consumer 4K. The Panasonic prototype looks even smaller than the AX2000 sized Sony prototype.
At least a Micro 4/3rds 4K sensor would do decently, anything smaller than 1/2'' on a single sensor design IMHO just wouldn't work for 4K. Optically, you are squeezing too many pixels in one place.

The JVC HMQ10 uses a single 1/2.3" back illuminated CMOS chip with 8.3 million active pixels.

Sensitively could be an issue on a 1/3" chip camera.

Considering it's a WORKING "proof of concept", I don't think there's much to quibble over... sure, we'll have to wait for specs and of course actual product announcements, but it's pretty obvious that both Sony and Panasonic are close to being able to release a 4K "consumer" camera (looks more like a "prosumer" model than a "handycam" format, at least for now) .
I'm sure the display camera has lots of "development quirks" to iron out, but if the market is there and the price is "right", it shouldn't be TOO long before we can shoot with one!
Next "stop", 4K!

I saw the Panasonic 4K display at CES - very nice.
Last year I think I saw one 4K TV. This year I lost count. Hopefully good 4K content will be available well before CES next year.
