After shooting some video for an upcoming music video release, the producer who knows I also offer 35mm photography services asks me to get some promo stills.

I didn't have my 35mm DSLR with me, so I used the F3!

That looks great! What were the file specs of the video you extracted this from? What's the pixel dimensions of the still image?

I was shooting 1920x1080 25fps 1/50th (as the footage I shot here in Toronto will be going to Africa to mix in with an existing project).

I extracted a frame and downsized to 960x540, and I believe the size embedded in post is 640x360 or something.

The image you see is quite treated in post however, and it was shot to SXS 8-bit 420.

Resolution is for sure not as good as a still camera, but try getting that creamy look out of DSLR.

For a grab off of video I think it looks fantastic! From a 640x 360 pixel pic, I don't know if one would be able to tell the difference between a video grab or a dslr still frame.

Ozgur those are nice images indeed.

You definitely don't always need 5184x3456 pixels like I get from my 7D.

What are your settings on the camera, and how are you capturing your stills? Very nice!

1080p24fps
Apertures: F1.9 - F5.6
Gain: 0db
Shutter almost always at 11.25 degree (or 1/2000) for least amount of blur.
Using NDs as appropriate
Zoom as appropriate
BBC's video profile most of the time (I'm leaning towards my own pp now)
Using a cheap magnification filter (+10) for some macro shots. Bought a set of 4 filters off of ebay for 19$. That cheap :)

Some of them were taken while on a tripod, most of them are handheld. Trying to make good composition to compensate the lack of resolution and color depth :) Too bad the camera is 8bit and is too noisy :(

On a few of them, i duplicated the video in after effects, masked out some parts and either used another part of the video with different exposure or graded it differently, creating a 'fake' dynamic range. Good eyes can catch those photos easily :) Also some shots are graded differently than usual (like that metalic yellow water or blue clouds)

Thank you for the messages :) (pm me if you have any more questions)

Have a nice shooting everyone :)

Here is taking more time to properly grade this image, the first one of her was quite bad.
