how well will AVI and MPEG videos mix together in editing?

usually they do not mix, so conversion of one (preferrably mpeg) is better.
Adobe premiere for example is able to import mpeg on the timeline and mix with avi, but do not expect good behavior into a transition or when applying an effect.
NLE applications designed to edit mpeg usually do not eat avi so easy too.
This discussion goes nowhere in general, since avi is not a real format until you specify the codec used, and mpeg is not either until you specify the exact type (mpeg1, 2, 4, TS ...).

I've mixed Canon XL-2 captured AVI footage directly on the timeline with MPEG-2 footage (using Vegas). There is no problem.

in fact here you probably mean AVI captured with microsoft DV codec and Mpeg 2-TS HDV from the JVC.
These format are different in ratio (one is 4/3 the other is 16/9) so you will get some problem with this.
HDV editing is reseverd to programs that can support it and i doubt you can easily mix with regular AVI.

i'll be using the adobe premiere pro to capture with.

filming with xl2 and the new JVC GZ-MC500 which captures mpeg 2
