Has anyone had success getting a direct connection between the WFT-E6 and an iPad?

I was able to very quickly get the two to connect via an Airport Extreme (so a router) - it works well - but haven't been able to find a way to get the two to connect without a wireless router.

Ideally using it in the field one wouldn't want to have to have a wireless router to make it work. So would welcome anyone's feedback.
