View Full Version : One more advantage of the GH2
Don Litten July 5th, 2012, 09:46 AM I don'r cover concerts. I don't have the equipment or experience for it and really have no interest in them...but my wife and I decided to go to a Beach Boys concert on Wednesday.
I'm sure this will be the last tour the remaining members will have and they're part of my youth.
The Venue is very strict about cameras, NO PROFESSIONAL CAMERAS. They check everyone.
I got the GH2 in with no questions and got 3 hours of high quality video (Which won't go on You Tube) that we can watch whenever we feel the urge.
Here is a frame grab.
Jeff Hinson July 6th, 2012, 02:06 AM Wow...part of my youth too. I used to play music professionally and have met the beach boys...but cant remember this ones name.....looks the same just a few more wrinkles.
How close were you for this shot and what lens were you using...settings?
thanks,
Jeff
Don Litten July 6th, 2012, 02:58 AM I was about 20 feet (3rd row). using the sanity5 patch and a Canon 1.8 50mm lens, 24 P, 1/60 standard -2 saturation -1, ISO 400 and exposing on the highlights by feel.. I think I was in ET mode then. I would swap in and out of that between songs.
The audio is usable but not great. I could have gotten an H4N and mic in but would have gotten nailed as soon as I started using it.
Here is another frame grab:
Jeff Hinson July 6th, 2012, 04:07 AM Great shots...
The left pic, second row,....you cropped this one right, since you have a fixed mm lens.
Can you tell me about the Sanity patch benefits? Ive updated to the new Panasonic patch, but have been afraid to load other patches.
Thanks for sharing,
Jeff
Don Litten July 6th, 2012, 04:19 AM Nope, none of them are cropped, just reduced to 800 x whatever JPEG. I moved around some. It was in ET mode though.
Sanity 5 IMO, is the most stable of the settings. Ralph did a great job on it. It's a fairly low bitrate (30 mb or so) doesn't lock up under stress and great IQ and color IF YOU AREN;T DOING ANY HEAVY GRADING.
My favorites and this changes
For night and extreme low light...Driftwood's CM Night.
For best quality Sedna AQ1
For Best all around LPowell's Flow Motion 2.02
For the most stable Sanity 5
Jeff Hinson July 6th, 2012, 05:02 AM Im assuming you have the latest panasonic high bit rate upgrade too, but prefer to use the other patches.
I will have to get the courage to try some of these, just afraid of screwing up my Gh2 factory settings.
Thanks for the patch info !!
Jeff
William Hohauser July 6th, 2012, 09:24 AM Sanity 5 is very stabile and the image improvement is subjectively about 10 to 20% better than the Panasonic settings. Panasonic should just buy the settings and make them an option however the range of SDHC cards you can reliably use is reduced.
There are other hacks that offer better motion with complex images and closer to SDI quality but they are best in very controlled shooting situations.
Don Litten July 6th, 2012, 09:35 AM What William said.
As far as usability, I'd rank Sanity 5 on top followed by Flow Motion 2.2 and I am testing some of the newest Cluster6 settings Driftwood came out with recently.
The others are good but specialty settings.
Jeff Hinson July 6th, 2012, 03:08 PM Don,
Id really like to see the video. Of course I understand your concerns about putting it up on the net.
a thought....would be to use Vimeo.com with a "password" for the dvinfo folks. You can really limit access and specify "no downloads" .
Still I guess it would be risky with all the hackers around.
jeff
Don Litten July 6th, 2012, 03:25 PM The whole thing is three hours long Jeff, but I am putting together a one song, 3 minute video that includes clips from the entire show. I'll put that up passworded when it's finished.
The big reason I don't want the world to see it is I sneaked the camera in and it's not fair to put it out in public. I know, others do it and I don't care about copyright, there are just certain lines I don't cross because I don't think it's right.
This isn't like the video's of politicians making ethnic remarks or cops dragging suspects down steps or the TSA braking laws (All of which I've published).
This is just a band making a living.
I'll let you know when I finish and give you the password.
Jeff Hinson July 6th, 2012, 03:42 PM I fully understand Don....
YOU are the star in this video. I like the Beach Boys music, but Im more interested in seeing your clips, not the beach boys. haha................don't tell them I said that. :>)
Jeff Harper July 6th, 2012, 04:49 PM I got mine into the Def Leppard concert, but focused on photos, as I was using a 45mm and I was too shaky. I felt really nervous holding a camera up for extended times; if I were caught I knew they'd snatch it. They barely let me in because it has a detachable lens, but I talked my way in, but the staff were just like hawks and more than one of them eyed my camera suspiciously so I had to keep a low profile. Got some decent pics, but I was so far away nothing great.
Jeff Hinson July 7th, 2012, 02:05 AM Don...
Jeff Harper's comment makes me wonder how YOU held the camera to take the 3hrs of footage. Did you sneak a monopod in too ? haha.
Jeff
Don Litten July 7th, 2012, 09:58 AM No, I thought about it but figured it would be a sure way to get escorted out.
I just braced my elbows on the seat arms and sometimes locked to my sides, and videoed.
I was hurting the last half hour,
Jeff Harper July 7th, 2012, 10:26 AM Everyone stood at my concert, the entire time. I had to hold my camera over my head to shoot, I got a few shaky 30 second clips. You were lucky to have been so close and to have been sitting!
Don Litten July 7th, 2012, 02:21 PM They were standing at times here too Jeff, I just stood with them. This is far from an award winning video and I've been making good use of Mercalli V2, but it's better than no video.
Andrew Rowe July 11th, 2012, 01:48 PM Ive updated to the new Panasonic patch, but have been afraid to load other patches.
Jeff
What's this new "Panasonic patch", Jeff? I can't find any updates since Dec 2011 - or is that what you are talking about?
Andrew
Jeff Hinson July 11th, 2012, 02:06 PM Im sure thats the one Andrew...the HBR 30p patch.

Just so I know what we're talking about...
A patch is the hack that allows settings to be loaded.
A setting is the thing Driftwood, LPowell, Etc keep coming up with.
We all call the settings patches.
PT Tools 3.65 Patch, Hack) came out 3/28/12
PTool v3.65d topic - Personal View Talks (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2712/ptool-v3.65d-topic#Item_215)
Settings come out weekly or so. A new Driftwood one is due any day.
I think the latest is cluster 6 Nebular

Don Litten July 11th, 2012, 02:37 PM Jeff, I have some of the concert ready to upload. I just have to get somewhere that I can get WiFi.
I tried the other night 16 hour upload and I lost the connection halfway through.
