Has anyone done this, or knows of a method of doing this? This annoying VF appendage gets in the way more often than not and I would love to just remove it since I've only looked into it once on the first power up and determined it's visual uselessness. I know there are wires in there so I haven't touched it - yet.

Yes, I've removed mine. I couldn't stand it anymore either. I'll post some pictures below so you can see what's inside the handle and how I got mine off, but please, do this at your own risk. There is a very fragile ribbon connector inside the handle which attaches the viewfinder to the camera. I'm not entirely certain I'll be able to get mine working again, but I don't much care. I agree with you that it's useless.

So what do you guys do to the "hole" that's left? Cover it somehow?

I just put gaff tape over it.

Nice pics Kirk. I'll have a go at it based on your process.

Thanks.

Final product. Looks a little like a Smith & Wesson handgun hammer now.

Just a little GT to cover a small hole. I'm sure I can devise a little better protection in the future, but for now it will work just fine.

Thanks guys.

Great idea. I agree, the viewfinder is worthless.

Are you able to retain the remote IR receiver after the VF circumcision? It's unclear in the photos...

Yes, you retain the IR. You just need to temporarily remove the plastic cover.
