Yes, by default, B white balance switch is ATW. To change it, go into Camera Set and scroll down to "White Switch B" and change that to MEM as opposed to ATW.

The "B" setting is either a true "B", meaning that you can manually white balance and store it as a preset, or else it is ATW (auto-tracing white balance).

Note that you need to choose whether to operate the camera through what Sony calls the "direct" menu. If you have direct turned onto "all", you must select ATW or B from the lower-left corner of the viewfinder/LCD. If you have direct turned "off", then you operate it using the 3-position switch on the left side of the camera.

I'm not sure why they didn't make the WB control a 4-position switch, with a top position being "ATW".

Because a 3 position switch has been the standard for a broadcast camera for years. It's much easier by feel to use a 3 position switch, top, bottom or middle, than a 4 way switch with 2 middle positions. Perhaps an extra button of ATW would be a better idea like some of the shoulder mount cam.

Direct menu optimally needs to be on "Part," because if it is on "All," certain functions will result in a "Cannot Proceed" warning. See 32:07 of Doug Jensen's EX1R Update video below:

Page 122 of the manual has what you need. Your best bet would also be to see what else you have set to automatic.
