View Full Version : Software groups.
Edwin Street May 10th, 2012, 07:16 AM I'm trying to expand my knowledge on specific software used for certain jobs, professional jobs that is. For example;
I know that for video editing there's:
Apple Final Cut Pro
Avid Media Composer
Adobe Premiere Pro
Sony Vegas
For composing there's:
Apple Logic
Avid Sibelius
Sony Acid
For digital effects there's:
Apple Motion
Adobe After Effects
For photos and paint there's:
Adobe Photoshop
Apple Aperture (maybe)
For sound mixing there's:
Avid Pro Tools
Apple Soundtrack Pro
Can anyone please expand on this or point me in the right direction where there may be a website. Also, can Apple Aperture do the same things Photoshop can?
Battle Vaughan May 10th, 2012, 09:25 AM Not sure exactly what you're asking, but if you want tutorials on most of these items, try lynda.com. Adobe has a number of tutorials on their products as well at adobe.com, they refer to it as Adobe TV.
Geoffrey Cox May 12th, 2012, 03:54 AM For composing you could add
Nuendo
Cubase
Digital Performer
Sibelius is a notation programme rather than a sequencer like the others.
Seth Bloombaum May 12th, 2012, 01:49 PM For sound mixing there's:
Avid Pro Tools
Apple Soundtrack Pro
And Adobe Audition,
and Sony Vegas, which was a multitrack sound editing/mixing program before it was a video editor, and is still pretty dang good at it.
Victor Nguyen May 12th, 2012, 07:49 PM what is digital effect? does it include 3d program also? you only listed compositing program
Edwin Street May 14th, 2012, 07:29 PM Yeah sorry I don't know the difference between 3d programs and compositing programs. Could you elaborate on the difference? And possible list some 3d programs. I've recently discovered Autodesk Maya. Does this do 3d and compositing?
Sareesh Sudhakaran May 14th, 2012, 08:35 PM Here's something I wrote down some time ago: About Moviemaking Software | Sareesh Sudhakaran (http://sareesh.com/2011/07/about-moviemaking-software/)
It might give you a basic idea. Hope it helps.
Edwin Street May 15th, 2012, 06:28 AM That is helpful, thanks.

3d are use to create cgi and compositing programs are use to mix cgi and real video footage together. 3d programs include maya, 3ds max, lightwave, cinema4d, Blender are some I can think up of right now. Compositing programs can also do some visual effect and they are created to work with real footage shot with video cameras. Some compositing program I can think up right now are after effect, Nuke, Smoke, Shake, and Apple Motion.
