D.J. Ammons January 25th, 2015, 11:25 AM For a novice how hard is the learning curve for Lightworks vs Sony Vegas Pro?
Brian Drysdale January 25th, 2015, 03:17 PM Having used both they've got pretty similar learning curves, they just have different paradigms. Having said that, I got up and going faster with Lightworks, it really comes down to how individual people like working. I feel that Lightworks has a cleaner interface and less cluttered than Vegas.
Vegas is better at audio than Lightworks, but Lightworks is better at long form and narrative editing, this sort of reflects their backgrounds..
Brian Drysdale January 27th, 2015, 11:03 AM Here's a quick start guide for Lightworks which gives the basics. There are different methods for carrying out operations, so you can use the mouse, keyboard, control console (be it the Lightworks or third party) or a combination of these. The layout is also flexible allowing the bins, viewers, timelines etc to be arranged to personal taste.

Chris Joy March 24th, 2015, 12:47 PM Any chance you're working on h265 support? Just got the NX1 and have to convert footage to edit. Thanks.
Chris
Brian Drysdale March 24th, 2015, 05:16 PM I'm just a Lightworks user.
I guess once MainConcept provide support for H265, Editshare will consider supporting it, I don't think it's an option in the MainConcept SDK currently being used. There is another Lightworks build due once the current maintenance beta is released. There has been a number of announced features that are due in the version 12 builds, at present the V12.0 introduces the tri platform capability, the content manager and colour correction improvements, amongst other things.
You can put a request for H265 in the Lightworks forum.

Noa Put July 25th, 2015, 01:58 AM I have seen you refer to "release versions", "beta versions" and now "release candidates", is there any difference between those?
Brian Drysdale July 25th, 2015, 03:31 AM Release versions are those that have gone through the beta testing stages and are deemed fit for release. The beta versions are new builds which often have new features to be tested by users, release candidates are beta versions which are close to being released, with mostly final fixes on each new build.
Having said that, a number of users do use the beta versions because they tend to have the latest bugs addressed. You can run both release and beta versions on the same machine. The beta versions are usually pretty stable these days.
Noa Put July 25th, 2015, 04:27 AM Thx for the explanation, I also see on the lightworks changelog page that they make a difference in versions by adding after the 12.5 version number "rc1", "rc2" and so on, are those all considered stable versions?
Brian Drysdale July 26th, 2015, 01:48 AM The RCs are not officially the release version, so bugs still being fixed on a weekly basis as developers and users find them. Although, by this stage getting close to release, so it's stable for practical use by people in that you could use it on a production and not have a single issue come up, however, they're still fine tuning it and correcting any arising issues, so it's not stable in the sense that V12.5 is not finalized until the final release version comes out.
Of course, no software is bug free, but there is usually a beta version running in parallel with the release version of Lightworks and it's not unusual for a reported bug to be fixed and available in under a week in the next beta build. Some users edit commerical productions with the bets versions because the latest bugs on the current release version have been addressed.
As an example, here are the cross platform fixes found in the RC4 release notes:
" Updated initial Licensing/Welcome panel
Prevented application lock out when a corrupt room .TGA fails to load
Fixed 'Awaiting rendered media' appearance for assistant applications
Fixed missing key assignable commands
Fixed incorrect effect overlay if the Start/End of an edit is marked when dragging an dropping an effect
Fixed incorrect image appearing on the record edit viewer when trimmed beyond the clip bounds
Fixed jitters starting playback with higher resolution material (XAVC)
Fixed pop out original function not working correctly on a bin set to List view"

Roger Van Duyn February 4th, 2016, 06:49 AM The last couple of weeks I've been trying Lightworks out. So far, it (free version 12.5) seems really good. I've been working through the online tutorials. The interface is very intuitive. The program is responsive and fast both on my Windows 7 Pro desktop (Avid MC) editing PC, and my Windows 10 laptop. Plus, it seems to share almost all my favorite keyboard commands with Media Composer. Good chance I'll become a paying user!
