Roland just started shipping a their CD-2 recorder (http://www.rolandus.com/products/details.asp?CatID=12&SubCatID=52&ProdID=CD-2). What do you think? A good competitor for a DAT? Or are there better alternatives?

It really depends on your needs. If you have a project that will require near-instant availability of the audio on a CD, then this will be a good alternative. If not, then you'll probably find much smaller flash-RAM-only devices to be more versatile, because this Roland is a pretty big piece of gear, and seems to be limited to CD-format 44.1K 16-bit audio.

The M-Audio MicroTrack (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack-main.html), with the ability to capture to 48K/16 (DV's native audio format), as well as 96K/24, along with its very small size and professional features, looks to be the logical replacement for much of the DAT market.
