View Full Version : Canon FD lens users - filter choices?

So I'm up to 5 lenses total in my kit at the moment.

The stock Sony 18-200mm, the Sony 18mm pancake and 3 Canon FD lenses - 50mm f1.4, 135mm f2.8 and 35-105mm f3.5 zoom.

I currently have UV filters on all of them to protect the glass, but I've noticed some interesting glare points and reflections from the FD lenses when there are brighter light sources near the front or adjacent to my shooting angle. I suppose it's nothing more than lens flare, but sometimes they are quite distracting to the eye.

What additional filters would you recommend to help cut down on the glare/flare on the lens?

Not a filter but some kind of shade or matte box.

You have to control the off axis lighting with the older lenses. Filter coatings for that have improved and reduced in price dramatically in the last 10 years.

So a french flag at minimum or a longer lens hood I suppose then?

Depending on the angle of the stray light a french flag may be needed.

On one shoot a couple of months ago I used a paper cup to get rid of a problem with an overhead spotlight on a shoot. Not pretty but sure was effective. I'm still looking for the right matte box solution for my rig.
