View Full Version : All GH1's are Hackable?!

Somehow I missed this!

If this has been discussed elsewhere, forgive me, but I couldn't find it.

For those of us still shooting on GH1's . . .

Official GH1 "Lenin" Hack Project Discussion - Personal View Talks (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16/official-gh1-lenin-hack-project-discussion/p3)

I have two GH1's -- one hackable, the other one unhackable. I don't want to have to deal with pulldown/unwrapping/etc., so I've been shooting in 720p across the board. I badly want 1080p, but if I want 1080p on the GH1 I must go 24p, and I'm not a fan of 24p.

However, this "news" (to me, anyhow, even though it's 7-8 months old) has prompted me to go to the old bastard 24p -- because I want 1080 resolution. I realize that I'll have to pay more attention to how I shoot, being that I've been shooting 60fps and now I'll be shooting 24fps. I'm not a "high-motion" kind of shooter anyhow. And I rarely use slow motion.

Comments? I'm surprised no one has talked about the upgraded hack, freeing all GH1's. Also, what about my pending switch from 720/60p to 1080/24p for the upcoming wedding season? Maybe I'm misled.

Thanks!

This has been discussed a lot and it has been this way for a long time now.

Some people are not as trusting of hacking cameras as others. It is called hacking for a reason. It is making something function in a way not intended by the manufacturer. Hacking can cause issues such as card write failures so in a live event environment it can be a bit risky. The higher you push the hack the more chance you have of a write failure. There are stable hacks however that make the cameras pretty solid. They don't push the quality as much but they are safer to use in a live environment and don't require super fast cards.

Haha, sorry . . . I've been looking all over the forum for someone talking about it. Can you direct me to some threads?

I love the hacks . . . it's been fine with my first GH1 (except that one time I bumped the 720p bitrate way up and it would just stop recording whenever it felt like it).

Plus it exposes the fact that Panasonic *could* be making this all available to us if they really wanted to.
