What color is the screen, black or blue? Does the timecode move?

Try moving VCR hdv/dv to each of the three positions in turn.
Other tapes play back fine, yes? Or is this a problem with all of them? Have you tested this tape in another device?

Adam,
Well, I have it working. I did nothing different, except: I foolishly left the camera on vcr all night and killed the battery. After reading your post I plugged it in went back and set camera on vcr to Auto, tried a dv tape to no effect, put in a differnt hdv tape and it worked, put the original tape back in and it worked!!!
Go figure that one!!!
Still could never get this camera to play the canon xl2 shot DV tape. Perhaps it was because it was shot with 3 tacks of audio.
thank you for taking the time for the advice!!!
Back to work!!

Three audio tracks on a Canon XL2 tape? How's that done then? How do you circumnavigate the basic DV spec?
And Canon were well known for recording DV outside the Red Book specification. Try playing the XL tape in the Sony in the cue and review mode (so you can see the pictures). See them? That proves Canon were not following the code.
