Anyone know if the radioactive rear element of the 50mm f1.4 Super Multi Coated Takumar will in anyway harm the sensor on the FS100?

Mmmm ...... there might be no one left alive to answer this.

Cheers :)

Explain yourself Dennis. Radio active? Do Asahi owners have to wear lead-lined protective suits to go out shooting? And is the half-life 1000 years?

I wish someone had told me years ago my takumar 50f1.4 was radioactive... I've been shooting for years and never realized it...

No, it won't harm the sensor.

There are a few clips on youtube related to radiation and camera sensors. I vaguely recall a link to one of these from dvinfo a few weeks back. A researcher has annihilated some camera sensors with radiation. For some forms of radiation, the normal glass IR filter conferred protection. She had to remove this to achieve pixel kills from radioactive sources.

This link should put you in the ballpark for closer searches :-

Whilst normal usage may be minimal risk to a sensor it would be prudent to store the lens away from the camera.

I figured it out when I woke up with an extra arm one day. Turns out is was the damn Takumar.
I've been storing it under the bed on my partners side hoping for some sort of 'beneficial growth', but nothing yet.

Wow, I had no idea - is that all the SMC Takumars or just the 50 f1.4? Is it dangerous to have say 6 of these in your camera bag all the time?

I do know that many photographers that used these vintage lenses have since died. To be safe you should give your lenses to me.

I don't know about the other Takumars, but the Olympus Zuiko 5omm 1.4 and the Canon FD 55mm 1.2 are great for defrosting dinner if the microwave oven has broken down too.

Now that's funny!

Were you planning on having children?

I've had my fill and taken the necessary precautions against further offspring. Thankfully I apparently have a backup plan as well now.
