Great - do you need it?

I'm a lover of DPA mics, but this one is not hugely popular, simply because users are in the 416 mindset. It's probably an excellent mic - but we don't know it's plus or minus points. DPA make many excellent mics, but until you find somebody with one, we don't know. Many moons ago I spent a lot of money on some 4001 mics for stereo recording, and really didn't like the sound. Many people rave over them, but they didn't suit me at all. B&H do 414s for half the price, so even adding the Rycote goodies, I suspect I personally would be happier with that because I know the sound well - and how the mic works on people and things!

I'm trying to narrow down the options. In the Dan Brockett comparison (several years old) he posted audio files from several shotguns, including high-end brands like Sanken and Schoeps. To me, the one that sounded consistently best, both on axis and off, was the Neumann 81i.
