Hi folks. Wondering if it isn't time to open up an ATOMOS Ninja/Samurai subforum now that some of us are in receipt and starting to use them...

Are you saying that you have recieved your Samurai? I am still waiting on mine and the last I talked to customer support they had not shipped. I am waiting patiently. Thanks.

If we can draw enough folks that actually have these products in hand, then yes we'll open a dedicated board.

When I do receive mine I'll gladly report my findings on this board.

Marty: having spoken to two dealers in the past 4 days, what I'm hearing is the delay on Samurai is due to some cool new additions being added to the firmware before release. And no, I don't have a Samurai yet but do have access to a Ninja in our office that I have JUST begun to play with...

The dealer that I have mine on order with says Oct 15 is the date. I traded emails with customer service at Atomos last week and they said they were shipping. Take that with a grain of salt. What I can tell you is that I informed them that I have a shoot around Oct. 25 that requires SDI capture to ProRes and they said that I will have it in plenty of time. I am hoping that is accurate. But...I am also pessimistic at the same time!!!

Are you able to confirm that the Samurai ships with an SDI cable? I need to make sure I have everything ready. I think the Samurai says it has a "mini sdi-adapter" in the included accessories list....not sure what that is exactly. My dealer says it includes and SDI cable....but I cannot confirm this and obviously don;t want to be left with a Samurai and no way to connect it!

Hi Marty. I'm planning on getting the samurai so would be really interested in how useable it is in the field.

One thing that I'm not sure about is the audio inputs: 1/4 jacks don't sound secure enough, compared with say the Aja xlr inputs, and I wonder if the audio pre-amps are up to Aja quality. I hope so as the price and other features look great

Would love for there to be an ATOMOS sub-forum.

My contact here in the US said they are doing final testing this week and should start to ship by weeks end. Not sure if that means from China where they are manufactured or Australia where they are based, but I don't expect to see mine before middle of next week at the earliest. I am open to being happily surprised though ;)

Received an update about my Samurai order today, from Creative Video in the UK. Shipping was expected tomorrow (19th October), but is now expected 3rd November. No idea if this is a dealer specific thing or global or what, just thought I'd let you in on my info. D

PS
Atomos subforum - yes please!

I would very much like for there to be an Atomos subforum. I am considering the Ninja and it would be nice to have all of the threads / posts about the Atomos products in one place.

I have an Atomos Samurai 'on-order' in the U.S. Based on my telephone conversation with a U.S. vendor, it seems the 'Samurai' is running late. November is the current 'shipping target'. No specific date, just November. My natural pessimism has kicked-in, the date seems 'soft, which means delivery will probably be closer to December before I see any hardware. 'Hope for the best, plan for the worst'. I don't have any specific 'deadline' need for this device, so other than my 'childlike' desire for my 'toy', I can accept most reasonable delivery dates.

This is here-say, water-cooler rumor, and certainly not an 'official' update.

Just my $0.02 worth, YMMV.

J.

That's the latest I am hearing too and I think the expectation of a December delivery may be more like it. Oh technology........

Here in Australia the latest I have is that my unit will be shipping November 2. But one ETA announcement has already passed for me so I'm not so sure. Yes I would like a sub-forum please.

This is directly copied and pasted from the Atomos homepage about 30 seconds ago:

Samurai Shipping October 26
Samurai production is on schedule for October 26 shipping date, and will be available to the general public from November 1

That tallies with what my supplier said ...

My vendor is saying that the last update from Atomos is pushing this until late November-early December. I don't know what to believe now. I just know that I am driving myself crazy deciding if I am going to stick with my XL-H1 and utilize a cleaner, SDI out to Prores with the Samurai (retaining a very good looking HD signal but not very cinematic) or migrate to a new camera that uses larger sensors and get the best of both worlds. I currently have a 7D but we are stuck with the aliasing issues and only being able to utilize the onboard codec.

As long as I am unable to try this with my XL-H1 I cannot really make a decision! Arggh!!!!

The Samurai is actually, really, truly and positively available in the UK right now. However, only if pre-ordered, ie everyone is sold out until next week at the earliest (8th Nov).

Anyone got their's yet? Dominic

James Kuhn
November 2nd, 2011, 08:37 AM
Dominic...great news! My vendor, here in 'the colonies', tells me he one of the four 'Black Belt' distributors of Atomos products, so, I expect a good message from him shortly.

Has anyone else heard anything? The website still says they are shipping October 26th....which obviously has passsed. You'd think they would have updated it if has been delayed again. Still.....I am getting impatient for some concrete answers.

Dominic Witherow
November 2nd, 2011, 05:01 PM
Marty, it's not delayed, just sold out due to the number of pre-orders. The next batch is being shipped to distributers at the end of this week and should be delivered to the remaining pre-order customers by 8th Nov. That is what I was told this morning by Global Distribution, who are handling the UK roll out. No idea what the situation is in North America. Dominic

Spoke with Guy Cochrane of DVEStore, a DVInfo sponsor and they are expecting theirs on November 11 in very limited numbers outside of pre-orders so if you are serious, contact Guy. I need to wait for the next batch...

To all;

As I mentioned, I don't have a pressing need for my 'Samurai', except for my my 'childlike desire' for a 'new toy'.

I'm glad to hear things are 'in-progress'. I believe Atomos has built the 'proverbial mousetrap', that is, if the hardware meets the 'marketing hype.'

To all;

Regarding U.S. availability of the Atomos Samurai:

Hi James,

Production is complete and the first units which were ordered form Europe have
shipped.

The US will be receiving its first units Mid next week realistically depending
on shipping and customs clearances.

You will have it in the next 1 week, the product is performing very well. Sorry
for the lack of info we have been really under the pump to finish build and ship
the units.

You will not be disappointed in waiting.

Good news indeed. I have had mine preordered for near 2 months so hopefully will get one fast. So that I am 100% certain, this does ship with an sdi cable, right?

Shaun Roemich
November 6th, 2011, 01:51 PM
Marty: IF NOT, a quality 75ohm BNC cable for that short a length would suffice for now. Slowly replacing all my old composite BNC runs with HD-SDI approved cable but I have had no problems with HD-SDI integrity out to 250' so far on quality custom built BNC cable...

Marty Hudzik
November 6th, 2011, 03:22 PM
My vendor told me that it is included in the box from Atomos but I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere for certain. When I ordered my accessories I did not include this because of that. I just need to know for certain ahead of time so I can be prepared.

James Kuhn
November 6th, 2011, 06:45 PM
Marty...at this point, an HD-SDI cable is the least of my issues, I want to get the 'hardware. Heh, heh!

J.

Marty Hudzik
November 6th, 2011, 07:00 PM
If you have an SDI cable then of course you want the hardware. But imagine waiting all this time, getting the unit in hand and not having an SDI cable to try it! That's what I am trying to avoid. I was totally cool with buying cable but my vendor says it is included. I know people can make mistakes so I am double checking just in case. :)

James Kuhn
November 7th, 2011, 10:57 AM
Marty...no worries mate! I was just teasing. I'm sure your vendor is correct.

BTW, if anyone gets a 'Samurai' in their hot little hands, please let the rest of us know. I received a call from my 'vendor' this a.m., he hasn't heard anything from 'his' supplier, yet, and was going to call them with the info from Jeromy Young, CEO Atomos.

We'll see how this plays out.

J.

Marty Hudzik

The details on the Samurai at the atomos site seem to mention a SDI to mini SDI cable is included. I am guessing that the unit itself has a mini SDI connector.

'The plot thickens'. I am told now, the 'Samurais' are currently 'held up' in 'Customs', but they are here in the U.S. All things being 'equal' (rarely, if ever, the case), 'Samurais' should be at our favorite vendors NLT the end of next week.

If anyone hears differently please let us know.

J.

November 8th, 2011, 07:50 AM
James....where are you getting all this information? I am not doubting you, but when I call my vendor they aren't aware of any of this. They are saying that once the units arrive in the US, they will need to be flashed at a service center with the latest firmware/OS that Atomos provides before they get delivered to the actual vendors. Hence, I am hearing that they will not be available until the last week of November to first week of December. I hope your information is right as sooner would be better.....

James Kuhn
November 8th, 2011, 10:08 AM
Marty...the 'delivery' info came directly from 'Jeromy Young, CEO Atomos'(see above). The 'updated Customs' information came from B&H.

The 'delivery' information, since it came from the 'Atomos' directly, as far as I'm concerned I'm concerned is 'Gospel'. The updated 'Customs' info is 'water cooler' rumor. Although, I got a call from my 'vendor' that sort of confirmed the 'Customs' story. I have also been told, Jeromy Young is in the U.S. overseeing the 'Customs' process.

JMHO, YMMV.

J.

P.S. My 'vendor' is also 'in the dark' about the delivery. He has complained to the 'Distributor' who, I'm told, 'will get an ear full'.

Marty Hudzik
November 8th, 2011, 11:13 AM
James,
Let me know if you hear anything regarding the whole "firmware update" I told you about. It could be true that the units shipped with the intention that the final firmware would get flashed on them when they arrive, thus giving more time for the Atomos programmers to tweak the settings.

Also, I was aware that the bulk of your information came from that Atomos email....I was just wondering about the customs thing as my vendor hasn't heard that one either. I just want to get one in my grubby little hands as I am hoping to utilize the larger LCD in addition to the recording features.

Thanks.

James Kuhn
November 8th, 2011, 11:41 AM
Marty...I'll keep my 'ear to the ground', but I think the 'unofficial' info will 'dry-up'. The 'Distributors' will be hearing from their 'Retailer chain' and the complaints will be legitimate. People like me are getting 'information' directly from Atomos, while the 'Distributor' and the 'Retailers' have been kept in the dark. As a 'consumer', I like the CEO of a company giving inside information, but keeping your 'Distributors and Retailers' out of the 'loop' isn't good.

'Bottom line', none of this is worth 'a Tinker's damn', until we get hardware in our hands.

JMHO, YMMV.

Hi Peter,

Did you get the BNC adapter cables in the kit? Supposed to be included. For those wondering, included cables are stowed beneath devices, not showing in photo. With Ninja, FW 800 and USB 3.0 are cables included, and Samurai supposedly also has the BNC to mini BNC adapters. Still waiting on our first shipment in US to verify.

Thanks

Update on UK distribution from my vendor (Creative Video) this morning. There is a quality issue with small numbers of one of the cables included and so, whilst the units are in the UK, they have halted distribution until next week (ETA 16th Nov) whilst the problematic cables are replaced...

Marty Hudzik
November 9th, 2011, 12:13 PM
Jeff,

Are you expecting that it will include BNC to mini BNC cables, or just an adapter to take an existing BNC cable down to a mini BNC connection? I just need to be prepared.

Thanks.

All the cables are stored under the items in the case.

You can see one of the mini SDI cables coming out of the Samurai on the second photo. The full-size SDI connector is a receiver plug, so you don't need a barrel connector to link it with a standard full-size BNC cable.

The details on the Samurai at the atomos site seem to mention a SDI to mini SDI cable is included. I am guessing that the unit itself has a mini SDI connector.

You get two mini-SDI to mini-SDI cables in the case.

Marty Hudzik
November 9th, 2011, 02:59 PM
Peter,
So I can be 100% certain about the included cables, can you clairfy something? There are 2 cables (very short) and these are mini BNC on both ends? I obviously have a full sized BNC connector on my camera and I need to know exactly what I will need when my Samurai arrives. I have no SDI or BNC cables currently, so I am trying to make sure I have what I need, no surprises.

I looked at your photo closely and the cable seems pretty short so I am guessing that I will need a coupler along with another standard bnc cable perhaps?

I wish the PDF file on the Samurai stated or showed the exact cables so that I would not have to bug you!

Thanks for any insight you have.

Marty Hudzik

You get two mini-SDI to mini-SDI cables in the case.

This is the part that is confusing me. Why they include mini-sdi to mini-sdi when I am unaware of any cameras that have mini-sdi ports on them to start with.....or I lead a very sheltered life! As my previous post was asking, I just want to clarify this because it seems odd is this is accurate.

Peter Corbett

For those of you concerned about the cables in the Samurai box, here they are. The Samurai has mini-BNC connectors.

2 x mini-SDI to SDI
1 x Firewire 800
1 x USB
1 x USB Power to use with USB blue cable (if required)
