View Full Version : I'm looking for a....smaller camera
Chris Mulkey September 10th, 2011, 08:28 AM So much like the ice skater, I play hockey. However I'm the Goalie, and I'm looking for a video camera to fit inside my helmet.
I've looked at the Replay, and the standard version may be JUST a little bit too big. I'm curious if there is anything smaller?
I also looked at the Looxsie or whatever, and that may be able to fit, but I BELIEVE that requires a phone to be by you. Which I could probably do, just prefer not altering my equipment to do so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Giroud Francois September 10th, 2011, 10:58 AM if you split camera from recorder, you can find very small camera (less than sugar cube sized).
then you can wire a solid state recorder somewhere else.
or you can use these ones

Chip Gallo September 12th, 2011, 11:04 AM I got one of these for use by a skater in capturing ice skating. It has a separate camera from the recorder and uses a cable to connect. You can stop, start and mark video with an included remote control.

Buba Kastorski September 20th, 2011, 10:08 AM I am looking for a smaller camera too,
but I need the best possible 1080 image under 1lb,
I am getting into aerial video and no crazy investments into the aircrafts, but it doesn't apply to camera, so my budget is open, currently I am choosing between s9100 and gf3,
any help is greatly appreciated!

I would consider this, but the lens may be too big at the end. I need it to go INSIDE my helmet. I havn't seen one in real life, so its hard to picture. But do you think it would fit inside the helmet?
Chip Gallo September 29th, 2011, 07:45 AM I don't have it with me but I believe the end is about the diameter of a silver dollar, if you have seen those. I can do a tracing and post it if you like. The issue might be getting a decent shot, with your head being in there too. It certainly isn't a "spy cam" size!

The lens end is 3.5 cm and the length is 5.5 cm. After the lens, it narrows to 2.5 cm and eventually 2 cm. You could also mount this on or behind the goal stand but obviously it would need protection from the puck. It has a pretty wide POV and enough DOF to catch whatever you are doing in front.

I talked with the guy in the pro shop at our local rink. He said at an NHL game, he saw a cam mounted outside the helmet because there isn't room inside. If you dig out any foam, it might compromise the helmet integrity. Your brain is more important than a video ... or whatever that saying is.
