So I am putting together a film with a lot of Green screen work. It was shot with a Cannon Xha1 so it’s all HD and they clips look good. Problems is there is a ton of short clips time varies from 2 sec.- 8 sec. and now I need to pull them in to AfterEffects to do all the FX’s and color correction. I don’t want to work on each clip as individual projects ( to time consuming).
So, I’m looking for an efficient work flow to use the same assets and resources as I work on the clips in groups. Dividing them up into groups with similar camera angles.
My fist thought is to do a rough edit in Vegas 9, then group them, render them out as one file and work on the it in AE and then send it back to Vegas where I’ll divide it up again.
Questions: 1- Is there a better, more efficient way of doing this?
2- If this is a good route to take, what is the best format to render from Vegas to be used in AE and then render out of AE to used in Vegas.

If the computer has AE... I see no reason why it shouldn't have premiere?

Export XML and re-import in premiere and relink all assets.

On the off chance that the computer ONLY has AE, best bet would be to just export the project as the final layout and go through it in AE. You can always re-cut and recomposite anything you need to within AE. Its a complete waste of time going from Vegas -> AE -> Vegas again. Vegas -> AE -> Output. You can do anything in AE that you can do in vegas.

What about this project makes you insist that it returns to vegas?

For round-trip Vegas-AE-Vegas try the Lagarith Lossless Codec when rendering out from Vegas and AE.

Haven't used it with AE, and it isn't a format useful for editing, but possibly for FX.
I use it when rendering masters to Squeeze/encoding.

I would normally recommend using Cineform but any Cineform files rendered out of Vegas (other than smart rendering) will jump about 7.5 IRE when brought into AE or Premiere. Cineform says it's a Sony bug so it may not get fixed anytime soon (if ever).

Hey Guys thanks for the help after reading through your thought I did some testing. It looks like for what I need the best way is to render out of Vegas in HD AVI. using the Lagarith codec. Then, do what I need to do in AE and then render back out in Quick Time HD mp4. I can not see any loss from the original clip even when it extremely zoomed in. The QT mp4 seems to have a smoother preview play back in Vegas then other formats. Thanks for the help and I would love to hear if you have any other thoughts.
