View Full Version : Atom ninja or not Ric Marrty August 11th, 2011, 08:34 AM Will the atom ninja make a difference or would transcoding (cineon)give me the same results? Ric Jeff Harper August 11th, 2011, 08:38 AM Don't know what Atom Ninja is, or Cineon. Also, make a difference for what? What is the problem you are trying to solve. You must explain yourself, because we have no idea what your trying to do or overcome. There are different reasons for transcoding. If you are having no problems you don't need to do it. Ric Marrty August 11th, 2011, 09:19 AM There are claims that hdmi out of the gh2 is raw,10bit and much better, there are also those that say that its not that impresive. since i don't want to edit acvhd I can use either the atom ninja that transcodes to prores or get the cineon transcoder. But thjis depends on the output quality of the hdmi if its basically the same as transcoding to cineon then i would not by the atom ninja. Hope i made myself clear thanks ric Patrick Janka August 11th, 2011, 10:04 AM I just made a thread about this. Ric Marrty August 11th, 2011, 10:11 AM If I am not mistaken your thread is mostly about the hack I need to know about hdmi capture. I want to no if it worth the $1k for the atom ninja or if I can get comparable results using the hack and transcoding to cinform codec. ric Ric Marrty August 11th, 2011, 10:59 AM Can I use any hdmi capture device like: 1- Motu 2-mini matrox 3- blackmagic bob? 4-anyother? Ric Brian Luce August 11th, 2011, 08:55 PM Ric, the answer is yes and no. New out the box, the GH2 can record hdmi but the signal is sabotaged by Panasonic. It's not usable. Tester 13's GH2 hack hasn't broached hdmi out, though he's working on it. Someone however has created a script that uses AVSynth software to record from hdmi without gliches. But it hasn't really clicked yet, perhaps because it's a few too many hoops to jump through and there isn't a lot of killer shootout footage to taut its merit. Everyone is waiting for Tester 13 hack to address hdmi. And from what I know, it's just 8 bit but might be a version of 4:2:2 John Griswell August 11th, 2011, 09:21 PM I would think if you can't get 10bit out of the HDMI then the hack would be just as good as an external recorder. Also don't forget no 720p or Crop mode via the HDMI port. Marvelsfilm’s Blog (http://marvelsfilm.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/panny-gh2-hdmi-recorder-bingo/) I rely don;t know what to belive. ric Patrick Janka August 12th, 2011, 10:48 AM If I am not mistaken your thread is mostly about the hack I need to know about hdmi capture. I'm talking about the thread I made about recording externally via HDMI for increased color information. It's only a couple of posts down. Jeff Harper August 12th, 2011, 11:02 AM I'd put my money into lenses, and concentrate on great shooting, if it were me. Patrick Janka August 13th, 2011, 11:41 AM Jeff, one of the big benefits of having more chroma (color) information (say, 4:2:2 vs. 4:2:0) is in color correction. It makes it easier to pull keys and such. Bill Bruner August 13th, 2011, 04:15 PM Panny GH2 + HDMI + Recorder = BINGO! Marvelsfilm’s Blog (http://marvelsfilm.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/panny-gh2-hdmi-recorder-bingo/) I rely don;t know what to belive. ric Ric -- Since that blog post, Martin Beek at Marvelsfilm has successfully output clean GH2 HDMI to the Ninja. The results make me want to run out and buy one. See this video: GH2 HDMI output recorded with Atomos NINJA (http://vimeo.com/groups/gh2/videos/26510222). Here's Martin's blog post (http://marvelsfilm.wordpress.com/2011/07/15/gh2-hdmi-output-recorded-with-atomos-ninja/) on the shoot. Hope this is helpful. Bill Hybrid Camera Revolution (http://hybridcamerarevolution.blogspot.com) Ric Marrty August 15th, 2011, 10:11 AM Yes but is it 10 bit 4.2.2.? ric Jeff Harper August 15th, 2011, 10:55 AM Bill, that is unbelievable footage at your link. I can see now what you guys are talking about. Brian Luce August 15th, 2011, 01:25 PM Yes but is it 10 bit 4.2.2.? No one seems quite sure what's coming out through HDMI, but if you run the AVSynth code, for sure you'll get 4:2:0 sampling. Ric Marrty August 15th, 2011, 08:17 PM Looks good but whats the work flow using the avsynth? Will avsynth work with another hdmi recorder like mini matrox or motu? ric Brian Luce August 15th, 2011, 09:28 PM Will avsynth work with another hdmi recorder like mini matrox or motu? Yes, any HDMI capture system will work with AVSynth. The Marvel blog has a semi easy work flow that's download ready. Probably the best thing though is what for GH2 hackers to get it up and running, they're breaking new ground every hour and may have already cracked hdmi out, lot of excitement over the GH2 hack right now and Vitaliy even has a special strike team of coders working specifically on the HDMI out. Bill Bruner August 16th, 2011, 05:00 AM You may also find Jorgen Escher's step-by-step workflow instructions useful: GH2 HDMI AviSynth No Hassle Quick Start Archive Jorgen Escher (http://colorbyjorg.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/gh2-hdmi-avisynth-no-hassle-quick-start-archive/) Also see Jorgen's update here based on Ralph B's latest: GH2 HDMI AviSynth No Hassle Quick Start Archive Jorgen Escher (http://colorbyjorg.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/gh2-hdmi-avisynth-no-hassle-quick-start-archive/) And here is why HDMI recording is better than the hack: Why hacking the GH2 does not make a better camera. HDMI recording still superior. Jorgen Escher (http://colorbyjorg.wordpress.com/2011/07/24/why-hacking-the-gh2-does-not-make-a-better-camera-hdmi-recording-still-superior/) Hope this is useful Bill Hybrid Camera Revolution (http://hybridcamerarevolution.blogspot.com) Ric Marrty August 16th, 2011, 09:14 AM Thanks for the info . But what I don't understand is : 1- Install the avsynth and just capture and the avsynth will do its thing automatcally 2- Do I have to do some tweeking in avsynth after capturing. Do you think matrox mini is a good alternative? thanks again Ric Brian Luce August 16th, 2011, 09:17 AM Jorgen says: "It’s a bit simplistic to think that you can upgrade a camera’s quality by just raising the codec’s bitrate; you’ll need to upgrade the limiting factors along the processing line all down to the sensor." What's so simplistic????? this theory transformed the GH1, and is doing the same for the GH2. The hack is currently working out an incamera HDMI hack that will eliminate the need to run to a 3rd party software like AVs. Ric Marrty August 17th, 2011, 10:40 AM Could processing through avsynth affect audio? specialy if using using dual eyes? ric |
