I have a music piece that I would like to edit. There are pieces that I like to remove and export it out to mp3. What programs do you guys recommend?

What do you mean by "pieces ... to remove"? Like cutting segments out to shortne it or like removing instruments or vocals.

Sound Forge and Peak are two industry standards. Audition is pretty good, and SoundTrack Pro is also pretty good, depending on the platform you're on. Sound Forge is sorta the 2-track editing horse of all the above, but that's just my opinion, not a "fact" statement.

I've never used it, but a lot of people rave about DSP Quattro. It's Mac only though, so no joy if you're on a PC.

I want to cut out a segment of a song that is part of a mix that is over an hour long.

Charles,

Get the free software known as Audacity. Just Google for it and you'll find it. I have used it for over 2 years on the PC and now have it on my Mac as well. It's one of those gems that many folks don't know about. It can support VST plug-ins and if you have Lame encoder on your system, it will create MP3 files for you. It was the first program I had that let me zoom to individual sample level and adjust the sample point waveform. This is great for getting out those hard to remove clicks and pops that automated algorithms can't.

Good luck,

Thanks I did but how do you move the cursor in realtime to get to a particular section in the song. I don't see anything that lets you do it.

That's one function it doesn't have is audio scrubbing. Just note the section you want in approximate time frame. Then click-drag on the waveform to select that section. Use copy, create a new track and then paste. You will be able to trim the ends to get the part you want fairly quick. BTW, hold down shift and play to loop the playback until you stop it. Keep working with it and you'll come to appreciate all it does for the price you paid.

Have fun,
