I am working on a project in Vegas and I have 2 video tracks, 2 audio tracks and 1 title track in use. Here is my question: I want to shift the entire project to the right so I can insert a another V-clip. How can I do this? I want to be able to lock the whole project and move it over a little without messing up any of the tracks up. Is there a way to do this?

You need auto ripple which is on the toolbar, but you want to first set it.

Look at the image I've put here, and study what is within the circle. Within the circle, there is a down arrow on the right, click on it and a drop down box will appear. Select "All tracks markers and regions".

then click on the main auto ripple button, and you can move everything at one time. from left to right, and from right to left, or whatever.

Make sure to go back and turn off the feature when you are done. You can use the settings of the feature for variations, such as moving just the things on one track, etc also, just play with it.

You're most welcome, Gary.

Once you do that, you can insert the new clip and the rest of everything will move automatically when you do. You won't actually have to drag the clips yourself.

Note: this can be done more quickly and precisely using the Trimmer.

I, personally, am not a big fan of ripple. I like to manually move everything so I know what gets moved and where. But it is a viable option. Having said that, there are many other options as well including:

1. Select everything and manually move them - there are many means of selecting the desired events and I use a script to select "everything after the cursor", for example.

2. Go to the Insert menu and choose "Time". That will let you insert a set amount of time at the cursor location.

3. Project nesting - start a new project, put your title in the front, and then just drop the other VEG file onto the timeline after the title.

The simplest way I know is to Edit/Select/Select All (Ctrl+A), then Edit/Group/Create New (G).

Then you can move the group.

Everyone has their preferences, and you do what works for you.

That said, the problems I find in the above approaches are:

1) If you manually select everything and move it, you may miss something, especially if there's a great deal of it over many tracks.

2) Grouping everything will make sure you get everything, but when you ungroup en masse, all of the audio becomes disconnected with its video. And if you don't ungroup it, or only ungroup parts of it, you end up with wicked surprises later if you try to move something or make a small edit.

There's no one right way to do anything, and Vegas gives you many options to do the same thing in so many different contexts, but for me, I find ripple edits to be the most effective and least-risky way of accomplishing this particular thing. Not that it doesn't carry its own risks, of course . . .

David, interestingly enough, your #1 is the exact reason why I don't use Ripple! :-)

I agree with the grouping. I also would not use that option as then "ungrouping" could give you unexpected results.

Ripple edits certainly are not without their risks -- especially if you're trimming on the timeline, and it's footage of a different frame rate from the project.

Edward is perhaps too modest to mention Excalibur which has a great variety of tools for selecting events (select all before cursor, select all after cursor, select events in the selection area only, select events on selected tracks only) without the risks associated with the methods already mentioned. As I have said before, there are several tools in Excalibur that I use all the time and this is one of them. Well worth a look.

Hehehe. Well there are plenty of people here who will spell it out explicitly! Me for one - Excalibur is indispensible. There . . .

and another vote for excalibur - and for edward who always answers my emails politely even if i have asked the bloody obvious....

Easiest way.....no groups, no rippling.....

CTRL+A to select all your footage, titling, layers, etc.

Drag it all to the right on the timline to give yourself room at the beginning.

Create whatever content you need to at the beginning.

CTRL+A to select everything again, but this time CTRL+Click on the new footage/titling/layers/etc at the beginning to deselect it.

Drag it all back to the left to preferred spot in relation to your new content.

Edward, does Excalibur work in Vegas 64 now, and if not, do you have plans to recode your plugins? And one more question; could you describe briefly what's involved with this task -- is it a real big, time consuming job?

if ther is one slight imperfection (NOT a bug mind you!) is it somewhat stands out against the default 'grey' interface - but wtf - it works perfectly!

Thanks Leslie -- this seems to be a rare occurrence among third party developers -- I have become dependent on a few such plugins in TVPaint and it seems that those developers are very reluctant to recode their plugins, which is the reason why I ask if there are a lot of complications involved with the process and what is reasonable to expect of its authors.

Paul, yes it certainly does work in the 64-bit versions - and has since version 8.1 - the first 64-bit version.

Leslie, it actually uses the standard "Windows" background color.
