I'm looking at a JVC SR-DVM600 DVD Recorder for convenient MiniDV to DVD transfer but have a time stamp carryover question.

I have a Sony PD170 that burns the time stamp on the tape but also use a Panasonic GS500 that does not. It transfers fine from camera to what ever via AV out but not via Firewire.

I'm not clear on how that works or why, but my question is, If I pull the MiniDV tape out of the Panasonic camera and put it into the JVC SR-DVM600 DVD Recorder and transfer it to a DVD will the time stamp go with it and play back when the DVD is ran elsewhere?

It's something about firewire.

I recall when I got my HVX, I intended to use it for legal work, but learned from Barry and his HVX Book that the time/date stamp never gets sent over firewire. I suspect Barry and/or others could explain the tech aspects of it, but I'm guessing it's because firewire is more than just data transfer, in that it also sends device control signals. I don't know why date/time stamp would get in the way of that, but apparently it does. I'm not aware of any cam that sends date-time over firewire. (Personally, I wish the HMC did, but then it might not be able to handle AVC). I think the time/date stamp may be "outside of the 1394 spec" and may actually be written to the tape in a specific location that is either not available or accessible to firewire.

This may not have been much help, but at least you know others share your dilemma.
