View Full Version : “Wavy” playback with PIP
Herm Stork June 2nd, 2011, 10:23 AM I’m using Vegas 9e on Windows 7, 64 bit. I’m getting a “wavy” effect on the edges of moving objects on a PIP. CLICK HERE FOR SAMPLE: . PIP in Vegas 9 on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/24570843) The upper left image is the most noticable. If I make either clip full screen it looks fine. The video was shot using a Panasonic TM700 and I’m using the original MTS file. This is the first time I have had this problem. How do I fix it? Thanks in advance.
Mike Kujbida June 2nd, 2011, 10:37 AM Herm, I don't see anything in your Vimeo link.
Herm Stork June 2nd, 2011, 10:48 AM It's the first time I posted a sample...not sure why the Vimeo doesn't show BUt if you click the title "PIP in Vegas 9 on Vimeo" it will play.
David Jimerson June 2nd, 2011, 10:59 AM Are you referring to the "waves" in the stripes on the people's robes?
Looks like a resampling artifact to me. What are the frame rates of the clips, and what's the frame rate of the project? What was the frame rate of your render?
Herm Stork June 2nd, 2011, 11:32 AM "Are you referring to the "waves" in the stripes on the people's robes?"
Yes. The stripes and edges of the robes. The frame rates are all 29.970.
David Jimerson June 2nd, 2011, 11:34 AM Try going into the clip properties and choosing "Disable Resample."
Herm Stork June 2nd, 2011, 11:56 AM >Try going into the clip properties and choosing "Disable Resample."
Tried it - didn't help.
BTW, when I play the clip from the camera out HDMI into a 54" Panasonic plasma, the image looks great.
Seth Bloombaum June 2nd, 2011, 12:41 PM I don't have a Vegas workflow to recommend, but, I do think that this is a scaling artifact related to interlacing.
If this is correct, the fix would be to deinterlace before rescaling for the pip effect. Such artifacts could also be related to clip and project interlace settings.
Herm Stork June 2nd, 2011, 04:36 PM I tried to deinterlace before rescaling for the pip effect. That didn't work either. I'm really stumped.
David Jimerson June 2nd, 2011, 05:25 PM Is this 1080 footage?
Vegas sometimes has a problem scaling it down too far.
Maybe try rendering it out to 720p 60p before you put it in the P-i-P.
By the way, any time you resize footage, you want to have the render video quality set to "best."
Herm Stork June 2nd, 2011, 07:08 PM "Maybe try rendering it out to 720p 60p before you put it in the P-i-P."
Tried rendering it to 720p 60p and then put it in the PiP...also set render video quality set to "best." Still didn't work. This is really frustrating.
David Jimerson June 2nd, 2011, 07:09 PM Are you doing the PIP with pan/crop, or are you doing with track motion?
Whichever one you're doing, try the other one.
Herm Stork June 5th, 2011, 12:04 PM Had to get some other work done before I could continue on this project. I used track motion to create the PiP. I tried pan/crop and still have the wavy video.
Ian Stark June 5th, 2011, 12:44 PM Is the pinp exactly the same frame ratio after you've reduced it?
Ian Stark June 5th, 2011, 12:46 PM . . . and you've checked 'reduce interlace flicker' in the clip properties?
Herm Stork June 6th, 2011, 08:35 PM Thanks to everyone. I'm not sure what exactly solved the problem, but it is solved! Maybe checking "reduce interlace flicker" in combination with the other suggestions. It seems life was much simpler before HD.
Ian Stark June 7th, 2011, 12:47 AM I don't know if this is good avice or not (i.e. whether there are any downsides to it) but as a matter of course, if I am resizing any clip I always make sure 'reduce interlace flicker' is checked - and I don't get that combing effect at all. Glad you got it sorted, whatever the method!
