This is a test shot I took with my Canon XL2.
I know it is uncompressed but hey, I like the look.

Try mixing some of the preset settings provided by some of the Gurus on this site.

Color Correction > None
Lighting > Whatever was available at that time.
Compressed > None so it's like a big 4mb still pic.

If anyone can put me on how to compress video shots perfectly without
loosing the quality, that will be great.

What else, hmmm, Nothing. Just captured and that's it.
But I will try to get some longer shots next time.

All DV is compressed, it takes place between the CCDs and the tape.

If you're talking about compressing for the web, you will always loose some quality. The trick is minimizing the loss. That requires a good compression program like Sorenson Squeeze.

You will always loose quality when compressing video; there has been a bunch of previous threads on this topic; they will help get you started in the right direction. Try the Search Button to if you have trouple finding them.

You can try tmpegenc, available from the link below. It will convert AVI to MPEG1 for free. However there is a small charge for MPEG2.

I've used TEMPGenc for various home-brewed flavours of MPEG1. When viewed on PC or CRT-Tellie I think they very very close to DVD . . and that is MPEG2. I've used high bit-rates which takes it out of the VCD format so I can't call it a VCD - but hey! If it Flys it Flys!

TEMPGenc is just too easy to use. PLUS you can stick files together too!

I am using Sony Vegas.
I did download the Adobe P. Pro trial version due to AE and Photoshop CS that I have already but I have not rendered anything yet on it.

I usually render using AVI or Windows Media on vegas since the Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 option are asking me to register blaze' blaze' blaze'.

Graham, I know right. Anytime I render using AVI, the quality of the video seems sooo VCD which I am not feeling at all. Even the sound quality is terrible, well, not to my satisfaction for something coming out of an XL2.

I mean, I use Canon XL2 but the view on my TV is definitely below DVD quality whenever I brurn on a DVD, but whenever I capture and do a play back on my computer (using Vegas), the quality is superb.


Does this have to do with an Encoder or something else that I am not adding to the soup to make it sweet?

Hi Eniola. I also use Vegas with the XL2, and get results that are very good indeed (at least in terms of image quality).

The compression you use should be based on the delivery medium, so if you want DVD you should choose MPEG2. As long as you keep the data rate fairly high, the MainConcept encoder included with Vegas gives pretty good picture quality. What you should be aware of (or beware of) is that the default settings in Vegas are for LOW data rate encoding, and the output is rough. Change it to 6 or 7Mbps at CBR and you should be fine.

Not sure why you have a problem with the MainConcept registration process, it's usually very simple.
