If you go, make sure you visit the Map Room in the basement. They have over 4 million maps, and they will bring you anything you want.

I've used this catalog
Library of Congress Online Catalogs (http://catalog.loc.gov/)

and hired a researcher from their list @ $30 an hour (in 2004). I didn't use any footage. In fact, LOC didn't hold the rights to anything we found there.

I've used footage from NASA. I only had to pay for the cost of the dub & shipping, since the footage in question was public domain.

Be aware that not everything in the LOC collections is in the public domain. I'm sure that the LOC staff can help you figure out what footage is and is not PD.

I've used this, too, but now that I'm doing 1080p projects, I'm wondering how to mix this 720x480 stuff in, or whether there's a place to find this kind of historical archive footage in HD.

When I was working in 720p, I could blow up the Internet Archive material 150% and get away with it. I don't know if going over 200% just to reach the top and bottom of the frame will work.
