View Full Version : lcd viewfinder
Ollie Walton May 11th, 2011, 05:33 PM Hi all,
i am looking for an lcd viewfinder for my 60d.
obv would love the z finder by zacuto. but can't afford.
i have had a look at big eye and lcdvf. Does anybody own these?
Also i have found the lcdvf brother at a cheaper price on ebay.
thanks
Ben Giles May 11th, 2011, 11:56 PM I use the LCDF on my 60D. Very happy with it. You won't be able to fully close the screen, but that's no big deal - you just have to be careful with it, as you do any other camera with an exposed screen.
It also works fine when you articulate the screen, one of the key selling points of this camera - and the Z Finder won't do that.
Budget options - just be careful about the optical quality. There's no point buying a loupe to guarantee focus if the optics don't give you complete confidence.
Ben.

The only loupe for the 60D that it not too heavy or requires a bracket.

Superb
David St. Juskow May 14th, 2011, 02:35 PM So here's a possibly dumb question- I was about to buy one of these LCDVF knockoffs because I hear nothing but great things about them. Then I found this:
Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: GGS Hoodeye HD DSLR LCD Foldable Viewfinder with 3.0x Magnification
for slightly more money, you get what appears to be the same functionality as the LCDVF plus an added screen protector (which you'd have to get separately) and the ability to either remove it entirely (like the LCDVF) or merely flip it up. Am I missing something? Is there a disadvantage to this? It seems like the obvious better deal.
Anyone?
Lee Tamer May 16th, 2011, 11:16 AM Ollie i use the hoodman cinema kit pro for dslr...it screws onto the shoe and its great, easy on easy off. steve
I was just going to suggest that, Its tons cheaper than the Zacuto product and works great
Ollie Walton May 16th, 2011, 05:53 PM how much is the hoodman/

Spiros Zaharakis May 17th, 2011, 01:02 AM Most LCD viewfinders attach on the lcd with magnets.
Most of the times these magnets are not that strong and the viewfinder keeps faling down.
I prefer LCD viewfinders that have a better and sturdier way of mounting but can be unmounted eazily and they don't occupy the hot shoe or the tripod thread as I need both for other purposes.
This GGS LCD Viewfinder Loupes 3X For 7D 5DII 550D 600D ab41 | eBay UK (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270741985323) is the best solution I've found so far and it's not expensive either.
It has a 4/3 shape but fits on 3/2 screens too.
Stelios Christofides May 17th, 2011, 03:01 AM I hate using LCD viewfinders that you have to glue a metal plate onto the camera. The best solution would be a sun shade like this:
Delkin PRO Pop Up Sun Shade for Canon EOS 40D (DC40D-P) - Jessops - LCD Shades / Hoods (http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Accessories/LCD%20Screen%20and%20Viewfinder%20Accessories/products/Delkin/PRO%20Pop%20Up%20Sun%20Shade%20for%20Canon%20EOS%2040D%20(DC40D-P)-74028/Show.html)
and then you can glue the LCD viewfinder on it but I can't find one for the 60D

Ollie Walton May 17th, 2011, 04:59 AM sounds good,
what do you think of it?
also with the loupe, does it cover everything in the viewfindeR?
Thanks

I did this as well. It works great.
Jonathan Palfrey May 17th, 2011, 10:00 AM I love my LCDVF. Works great and not too expensive.
Colin Rowe May 19th, 2011, 01:36 PM LCDVF is great, if you dont need diopter adjustment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This looks really neat and is certainly the right price.
Does the glue aspect of putting the protector on muck anything up?

Hey Spiros,
I've read: "for the 3" 3:2 ratio screen (such as Canon 550D, 600D, 60D, etc.), it will lose around 1mm for left and right side"
Do you find this to be a pain to frame up shots?
James Donnelly May 21st, 2011, 11:21 AM This looks really neat and is certainly the right price.

The frame gets mounted to the camera in such a way that it covers the proximity sensors located above the LCD.
When you try to remove the frame, the red plastic rectangles which cover the sensor will most likely come away with it.
This is what happened to me with the zacuto frame I used, and although I was able to put the bits back in place, one of the very fragile legs that clip them in to the camera was damaged, so now they are not firmly held in place.
As for the covering of the sensor by the frame, I have never encountered any issues from this.
