I am a new owner of the Sony FX1 camera, coming from the JVC GR-HD1.
(each time I made a recording it made me cry with the JVC)

I was wondering if there are any utilities like the one that came with my JVC called HDCapture from PixelA. The reason is I dont have that great of a machine to run Premiere Pro. The capture utility gave me a great way to capture the raw m2t format onto my HD without the overhead of Premiere Pro.

Does such a utility exist for the FX1? The JVC one wont work for FX1.

capDVHS works really well. Depends on the NLE you are using. Premiere cannot work with m2t so for Premiere you will need a powerful enough machine to capture directly to the Cineform intermediate with Premiere or buy an upgrade from CIneform that will allow you to use HDlink. Edius Pro3 and Vegas 6 will work with m2t ( as will Pinnacle and Ulead).

Let me start by saying welcome to the clan.

You might wan to consider purchasing Cineform's Connect HD - www.cineform.com/products/ConnectHD.htm. This is a usefull bit of software along with Sony's Vegas for less than high power pc's. It is also one of the few pices of software that does scene detection for the transport streams of the FX1 and Z1.

My pc is not of the highest spec but I manage more than adequately using Vegas and Cineform.

Another bit of software you may want to look at is Gearshift from www.vasst.com which allows you to work with a 'proxy' and when done editing, you can substitute the original and render.

Good luck
