View Full Version : Can't find XF100 - other affordable 4:2:2 options?

Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready to leave the country for a couple of months to work on a documentary and I'm having trouble finding a camera. We have a very limited budget, but need to shoot in 4:2:2 (preferably tapeless). The Canon XF100 seems perfect for us, but we've been unable to find it anywhere (I'm in the U.S.)

We leave for India on June 14 so I'll need to acquire something within the next few weeks. I haven't been able to find any information about when the XF100 will be available here. Other than the XF300 (which is a bit more expensive than I'd like), are there any other options I should consider for shooting 4:2:2 on a budget if I can't track down an XF100?

Thanks in advance,
Luke

Will you do any stop in another country on your way to India? I know it's suboptimal you won't have time to fiddle with the camera. But if you can find one then get a firmware upgrade to get support for US standards and go on?

I got mine in fotoboom.com, Madrid, Spain. They don't write stock on their web page so I can't tell you if it's available.

If it's gotta be 4:2:2 and tapeless the other option open to you is the Panasonic HPX170. They're only a couple hundred more than the XF100, maybe they would be more available.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys - I had forgotten about the HPX170... I had mentioned it to the producers previously, but I think the high cost of the p2 cards compared to CF cards scared them off - I'll have to remind them of that option and see if they want to reconsider....

Thanks again!

It's sadly of little use to you Luke but I have an XF100 on order from Jigsaw24 here in the UK and even they don't really know what's happening in Japan. They are trying to find out for me but it seems a complete unknown at the moment as to when new stock will be available.

Thanks everyone - I had signed up for email notifications for the XF100 at both B&H and Amazon. Never heard a word from B & H, but got an email a few days ago from amazon saying they had a few. We placed our order and it wasn't looking good until yesterday when they finally charged our card and sent a tracking number! I should have two XF100s by the end of the week!

Thanks again, everyone for the help...

Bought a Switronix(sp) light from Scott last year, awesome dealing with him. Highly recommended.

I just wish I hadn't bought my xf100 already in Hong Kong, or I'd buy from you, since I am currently in Dallas right now. :(

B&H Photo shows XF100 "In Stock" today (June 21, 2011).......

I noticed that, too, and got my order in as fast as my little fingers would fill out the form. I had been checking B&H's site every day because I have to travel to shoot a documentary next month and really wanted something smaller than my JVC GY-HD100. I used to own a Canon GL2, which I loved and was easy to travel with, and I can't wait to start shooting with the XF100.

And it's already listed as back-ordered again. I hope my order went through before then. I had noticed the camera available on at least one other site earlier today.

Amazon currently lists the XF100 in stock, but at a price gouging $3,300.

Jacking the price up to list during a tight market is.......I'm not a fan of this.
