are there any alternatives available that will work just as well?

Any USB card reader should work.

Any of those should work fine. They aren't very different. My preference would be for one with a USB cable to minimize the potential for damage at the connection from all the weight.

By the way, from the MXM Express web page about the MXM070:

"This reader does not work with Sony SXS Pro memory cards"
