Looks like SD is venturing into the video world.

PIX Recorders | Sound Devices, LLC (http://www.sounddevices.com/products/pix.htm)

Promising design. BUT looks like they didn't get any input from actual DPs. Looks like there's no mount points on the unit!

Looks very cool! Built like a tank. Great battery options, great connectivity, great audio, they've thought of everything except easy mounting options :-)

Saw the unit at NAB on Tuesday and there is an 1/4" mounting hole between the battery mounts on the rear. They had them mount with an articulating arm to the camera. The screen looked crystal clear and had various monitoring options for both video and audio and play back of clips stored on the unit. Very impressive unit with a June release date and if I remmeber correctly a price of $1595 for the 220 and $2595 for the 240. Very solid built unit just like you would expect from Sound Devices.

FWIW....

some info on these new recorders and you can see them mounted on cameras (although the video doesn't show the actual mount).

The price was moved up on these it seems. Some nab show footage quoted prices of 2595 for pix 240 and 1595 for pix 220 and others quoted higher prices. I got definate confirmation that the units are way higher than 2595 and 1595. Sound devices sent an email to me stating that the US list price for Pix 240 is in fact 2895 and 1795 for Pix 220.

Ok I got the price thing straightened out thanks to another email from Sound devices:

"That's Paul Isaacs, and I'm seen in the background at about 0:18 (probably getting ready to tell someone the price of the PIX 240 will be $2895). Some of us at the booth were giving the $2595 figure and others were giving the $2895 figure and it has caused a little confusion. For the PIX 240, $2595 is the US "street" price, and the US list price is $2895. In other words, the price you're seeing on Coffey's website of 2595 is correct and expected."

Anyone have any updated release dates on these bad boys? Or are they officially out and just seriously backordered?

I will be reviewing the 240 for DV and Videography and was advised by SD's PR firm that evaluation units will be available after IBC. So that tells me most likely to expect late-August or early-Sept shipping at the earliest. And expect it to be backordered.

Ah, thanks Ned. I'll be looking forward to your review. From what I know about the 240 I am pretty sold on it, though. Guess I should plunk my $$ down and get it line!

My dealer says they hope to have their 1st unit this month and start shipping in October. Not exactly carved in stone but I hope to see mine soon.

I saw that on their website too. Its not in stock. I called and talked to them today about it.

If it were in stock there would be one on the way to my house.

Finally got notification from Abelcine that my PIX 240 is on it's way to me in Sydney. It should be here by next week. I will give my impressions in the 1st impressions thread.
