Nicholas de Kock April 11th, 2011, 07:33 AM Made my donation today!
Sam Kanter April 12th, 2011, 01:12 AM Great - he's more than half-way. I don't understand why all 60D owners haven't contributed - do they not know what this firmware will do (60D has some of these features already)?

Mindaugas Ciciunas April 13th, 2011, 01:55 AM It would be sad if contributions stopped without reaching the goal...
Sam Kanter April 13th, 2011, 10:18 PM Just the zebra stripes (for under and overexposure) and rack focus (telling you when you are in focus) are worth their weight in gold if you shoot video. 60D owners - let's get this done! Make a small contribution now at the bottom of this page:

Charles Newcomb April 17th, 2011, 05:17 PM Done.
Looking forward to it
Also ordered his field guide from Amazon.
James Strange April 18th, 2011, 04:13 PM Donated, will order a 60d as son as ml is out for it (as long as it has auto restart)
Nicholas de Kock April 19th, 2011, 12:21 PM Finally! Installed ML on my 60D today and works great! Peaking & auto restart is all I need :)
Stelios Christofides April 20th, 2011, 02:03 AM I can hear a voice in my head not to mess around with my new 60D if it is still under warranty...
Stelios
Nicholas de Kock April 20th, 2011, 07:22 AM Stelios mine is still under warranty as well but I had to see what the fuss is about and ML really is incredible. Pretty straight forward to install, follow the Wiki 550D instructions however use the 60D files. ML runs off the SD card so if you don't have a SD card with ML on it doesn't boot up and you're cam is back to it's old self. Personally I can't imagine ever shooting without ML again, you can even change your white balance while recording. Still a few bugs to be ironed out with the Magic Zoom feature and a few other small issues but for the most part it's pretty solid.
Stelios Christofides April 20th, 2011, 03:29 PM Nicholas you mean that it uses the same SD card that you record the images on? Is it easy to install? I am worried that if I make a mistake in installing it I might damage my camera.
On another note. Where in SA are you living. I used to live in Joburg (for about 26 years) and now I am back home in Cyprus.

Nicholas de Kock April 21st, 2011, 02:07 AM Small world I tell you - I'm near Potchefstroom less that 2hours drive from JHB but I work in JHB all the time. I didn't know what I was doing when I was installing ML either I didn't even read the instructions I just tried doing it myself so you can't screw up that up, I usually only read the manual after I cant get something to work.
I installed it on Firmware version 1.0.8.
Follow these instructions:
550d install - Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki (http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/550d_install)
But use these files instead of those in Step 0: (1.0.8 or 1.0.9 is your camera firmware version).
Index of /magiclantern (http://sztupy.hu/magiclantern/)
Once everything has been installed download these crop mark images and put them in a directory called "cropmks" on you SD card with the autoexec.bin.
https://bitbucket.org/sztupy/magic-lantern-for-60d/changeset/4a3c1b0257bf
If you did everything correctly and turn on your camera you will see it load ML from the SD card (same card you store your images on when recording), press the "Trash" button to bring up the menu, other keys to change settings is the SET, Q & PLAY (Image preview button). Lastly check for updates as the current version has a few bugs. 60D - Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki (http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/60D)
James Strange April 28th, 2011, 08:37 PM Anyone got any inside info on the latest with magic lantern for 60d?
Also, anyone heard of it being developed for 600d and if there is a donation account for 600d?
Looks like were must onedonation away from the 60d target.
James
Mike Peterson April 28th, 2011, 10:27 PM The target has been reached. They are making good progress and it looks like there are only a few items that arn't working so far. Lots of work done today on it. you can see their progress by following the links earlier in this thread.

Donation goal was reached. ML for 60D still in Alpha, hopefully Beta will come soon!
Sean Vergara April 29th, 2011, 03:11 PM You have received a donation ....even tho it wasn't needed.
Sam Kanter April 30th, 2011, 04:52 PM Wow! It looks like almost everything is working!
Hopefully it will be in Beta soon?

Hopefully it will be in Beta soon? I think I'll wait until then...
Nicholas de Kock May 4th, 2011, 11:39 AM Tested the new Alpha 9 release by Alex today & it's very stable compared to previous releases, pretty much everything is working and the flickering menu is also stable now - best to wait for a Beta though.
Sam Kanter May 4th, 2011, 03:11 PM Has he figured out the issue that bricked his 60D, forcing him to get a new one???
I thought he said not to DL until problem was solved?
James Strange May 24th, 2011, 06:38 PM Just bought a 2nd hand 60d (too good a price to pass up) to go with my 7d and 550d (the latter of which has ML on it)
There hasn't been much activity on the ML 60d pages, but it looks like the latest version (alpha11) is a completed version?
I'm sure I read that you should wait for a beta version, what are peoples thoughts / opinions?
anyone been using it?
Cheers
James
Sam Kanter May 24th, 2011, 07:35 PM Alex, the developer, said that Alpha and Beta are just subjective terms. He says the latest 60D version is only "slightly less stable" than the 550D version. I'm tempted...
James Strange May 24th, 2011, 07:55 PM Tempting indeed.
This is probably a question for Alex then, but in case anyone here knows,
Can you use the sam ML card on both 550d(t2i) and 60d? or do you need to use separate cards for each camera (I'm thinking its probably the latter if the ML builds are different per camera, but it would be very handy if you could use the same ML card in both 550d and 60d
James
Sam Kanter May 25th, 2011, 12:14 AM Seriously doubt it. There are difference between the cameras.
Why don't you try it - let me know?
:-)
Sam Kanter June 16th, 2011, 01:20 AM Installed Alpha 12 - works fine. Amazing firmware!
Jon Shohet July 21st, 2011, 03:32 AM Any new user feedback on the latest firmware?
Mark Von Lanken July 21st, 2011, 08:53 AM I downloaded it last week. I love it. Install went well and the magic zoom features are awesome when shooting weddings or for anytime when you are shooting a live event. I also really like the audio meters, especially since I have started shooting with manual audio with my Rode Video Mic Pro. We are also looking forward to the auto restart feature for the unmanned ceremony cam.
Nicholas de Kock July 21st, 2011, 11:37 AM I also used ML at a few weddings I was very impressed until it's started giving me major problems now I stay away from ML, can't afford to have my camera freeze during important shots. It worked without a glitch & then suddenly freezes everything until I format the card - brilliant features but scary at weddings.
Jon Shohet July 21st, 2011, 11:35 PM That's too bad Nicholas. No clue as to what triggered the freeze?
No permanent damage though, right?
Nicholas de Kock July 22nd, 2011, 02:14 PM Jon nothing permanent, the freeze was trigger when I switched SD cards, one card would work and another would freeze my camera, this happened while I was filming a wedding just before the ceremony, totally freaked me out. I donated money toward the development of ML it's a powerful hack I just can't trust it again personally. I haven't tried ML again since the indecent however I wouldn't say someone else shouldn't give it a try it's really worth it & if it works for you it's amazing.
Another issue I discovered today is with Eye-Fi cards, my 60D won't turn on at all when I use an Eye-Fi card, which is very disappointing was hoping to play with my new toy, I can only imagine that ML has something to do with this.
Update: After uninstalling ML the Eye-Fi card works great.
Sam Kanter July 23rd, 2011, 11:10 PM Did you take the battery out and put it back in? This is what is suggested if any issue like a freeze comes up with ML.
Nicholas de Kock July 24th, 2011, 03:30 AM Sam yes I did & it kept freezing every time after I took out the battery, I had to format all my cards in another camera to get my ML camera working again. Like I said ML is amazing but I just don't feel comfortable using it at once in a life-time events like weddings. I would love to hear from other event film makers to hear if they had any issues so far.
James Strange July 24th, 2011, 05:20 PM I got magic lanterm (the 8th july unified version) on both my 60ds ang my 550d,
AWESOME!
Too many features to list, but a few of my favs
Not only manual audio, but a short cut to raise and lower it whilenrecording
Auto restart every 12 mins
Built in intervalometer
And much much more!

I would probably feel the same for weddings, but I don't do them. I have used ML for live events, but not crucial ones. So far ML has worked without issues. How can you do live events without monitoring audio with headphones, that ML provides? Do you have a separate sound man?

How about audio monitoring with headphones? I would not consider doing a live event without it.

Have you reported your bug to Alex and asked him if he knows of this issue?
Nicholas de Kock July 25th, 2011, 07:24 AM How can you do live events without monitoring audio with headphones, that ML provides? Do you have a separate sound man?
Sam I never use the audio from my Canon cameras for anything serious, the Canon only records at 44.1kHz and not the standard 48kHz. All my audio is done off camera with either a Zoom H4n or into my two Sony EX1's, I use the Canon cameras for creative shots only.
Jon Fairhurst July 25th, 2011, 11:09 AM How about audio monitoring with headphones? I would not consider doing a live event without it.
That has been in Magic Lantern from the first alpha versions on the 5D2. I don't own a 60D. If it has a headphone output, monitoring can be enabled.
James Strange July 25th, 2011, 05:13 PM How about audio monitoring with headphones? I would not consider doing a live event without it.
Yep, all you need is a usb adaptor for your headphone, its an option in the ML menu, 'monitor audio usb'
So you can monitor audio, but most of the time i run my tascam as a backup
Sam Kanter July 26th, 2011, 10:11 PM That has been in Magic Lantern from the first alpha versions on the 5D2. I don't own a 60D. If it has a headphone output, monitoring can be enabled.
By saying "how about audio monitoring" I wasn't asking if it had it - I use it all the time. It was more "how about mentioning" this important feature.

Are you saying you can't obtain "serious" audio at 44.1kHz? While I often use an external recorder, 44.1kHz recorded by the 60D results in very nice audio as well.
Sam Kanter July 26th, 2011, 10:16 PM That has been in Magic Lantern from the first alpha versions on the 5D2. I don't own a 60D. If it has a headphone output, monitoring can be enabled.
Jon - FYI, no Canon DSLR has a headphone output. Magic Lantern uses the USB port. One needs a converted cable, or using some adaptors on the USB cable that comes with the camera.
Jon Fairhurst July 27th, 2011, 12:05 AM On the 5D2, there is an analog, TRRS, A/V output.
Rather than "headphone output", I should have written "audio or A/V output." Without that, the firmware would have nothing to enable!
Jordan Hooper July 28th, 2011, 01:15 AM Just the other day (before having any knowledge of ML) I updated my 60D to firmware 1.1.0 from 1.0.5.
Is anyone running ML on a 60D with 1.1.0?
Are there downgrade options to 1.0.9 or does ML work on 1.1.0?
Sam Kanter July 28th, 2011, 01:37 AM Latest version is for 1,09. You would have to downgrade, but check before doing it - I have never tried this and don't know what possible issues are.
Peter Burke July 28th, 2011, 04:36 PM My 60D has firmware 1.0.5 and I want to use ML, but only firmware 1.1.0 is available on Canon's web site.
Where can I get firmware 1.0.9 to make ML work ?
Sam Kanter July 28th, 2011, 11:31 PM Don't know where to DL 1.09.
