View Full Version : Gemini 4:4:4 Photos
Dan Keaton April 4th, 2011, 05:48 PM Dear Friends,
I am posting some photos of the Gemini 4:4:4.
These will be helping in showing just how small we made this very powerful, full uncompressed recorder.
The actual size is 5.4" x 4.5" x 1.1" or 138 mm x115 mm x 28 mm
The unit comes with a custom fitted hard case.
The interior foam is special sturdy, anti-static foam. This is a premium foam that should not degrade in normal use.
The last photo shows a nanoFlash for comparison purposes. The Gemini 4:4:4 is just 110% the volume of the nanoFlash.
Of course you may see this in person at NAB, and we will be recording and playing back, using the Gemini 4:4:4, in full uncompressed. Our Booth is C11126, near Sony in the Central Hall (near the rear).
This link will help you find our booth.

Bruce Schultz April 4th, 2011, 07:46 PM I'm smelling a "best in show" award in the immediate future . . .
Nice work C-D
Andy Shipsides April 4th, 2011, 08:11 PM Looks awesome Dan!!
Nigel Akam April 4th, 2011, 08:45 PM Can't wait. See you at NAB
Piotr Wozniacki April 5th, 2011, 04:56 AM Dear Dan,
[joking mode on]
I don't think content like this is allowed on a public site like DVInfo; this is just porn, making some people (myself including) salivate...
;-)
[joking mode off]
Seriously though - congratulations, again!
Piotr
PS. What would be the Gemini price for trading-in my nanoFlash, considering I'm a veteran (should I say - even a pioneer) CD customer? Yeah, I know I've been a PITA :)
John Richard April 5th, 2011, 07:55 AM Makes me wish our Canon XLH1 and XHG1 truly output 10bit instead the 2 "empty" bits in the HD-SDI stream.
Looks to be a ground breaking device.
And the built in monitor lightens the load and the cable wrangling.
Rafael Amador April 5th, 2011, 01:33 PM I agree with Piotr: Looks simply sexy.
I wish I'd need a GEMINI 4.4.4. :-)

Allan Barnwell April 5th, 2011, 03:42 PM I'm very excited about this product. It's looking like 4:4:4 is going to be the new 4:2:2 after this NAB.
From a sales standpoint, I haven't seen a camera selling like the Sony F3 since the Panasonic HVX200 - and that's saying something considering the price point difference.
I would expect we'll sell a Gemini with the majority of F3's we deliver. It just makes sense if you're going to make the investment.

Dennis Dillon April 5th, 2011, 07:36 PM Dan,
Is your F3 RGB?
Dennis Dillon April 5th, 2011, 07:56 PM Let us not forget the F3 with an 8 bit recorder is way more than most of us need to deliver.
Buck Forester April 5th, 2011, 08:23 PM Looks super but I do hope the case interior comes in a more macho color!
Dan Keaton April 5th, 2011, 09:46 PM Dan,
Is your F3 RGB?
In other words, do we have the Firmware Upgrade yet?
No, not yet. We have been attempting to obtain the Sony F3 Firmware Upgrade.
Dan Keaton April 5th, 2011, 09:49 PM Looks super but I do hope the case interior comes in a more macho color!
Dear Buck,
The Pink Foam is Pink in color to indicate that it is "Anti-Static" foam.
This is an industry standard color for most "Anti-Static" foam.
Anti-Static foam helps ensure that the Gemini 4:4:4 is not harmed by serious static electricity that can build up and discharge during shipping.
Timur Civan April 6th, 2011, 02:56 AM Oh my!
Its smaller than i thought.
Dan Keaton April 6th, 2011, 06:21 AM Dear Timur,
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
We like small, powerful, and low power.
The monitor is still 5" diagonal.
John Richard April 6th, 2011, 08:16 AM I think the built-in monitor is something to enter into the cost equation when considering TOTAL cost of ownership. With the Gemini you don't have to spend the money on an external monitor. That's about an $800 to $1200 cost advantage to the Gemini.
One suggestion if possible: some sort of sun hood accomodation. The SmallHD monitors do a very nice job of notching their case and a collapsable sun hood quickly mounts for use in high ambient light environments.
Dan Keaton April 6th, 2011, 09:12 AM Dear John,
We are designing a Sun Hood as an extra cost accessory.
We will not have it ready for NAB.
Michael Carmine April 6th, 2011, 11:16 AM Will you still be able to run the F3 and the Gemini with one on-board battery like the switronic 62?
Dan Keaton April 6th, 2011, 11:35 AM Dear Michael,
Do you mean the Swit S-8U62 battery?
If so, yes.
Here is a source for the special cable needed to power the F3 from this battery.
nanoFlash.net - Batteries and Chargers (http://www.nanoflash.net/batteries_and_chargers)
One also needs a P-Tap (also known as a D-Tap) cable for the Gemini 4:4:4.
We may include this cable with the Gemini 4:4:4.
Alister Chapman April 7th, 2011, 08:20 AM Very excited Dan.
I noted Denis's comment that 8 bit is all most people need and while this is often true, you never know what your next project might be. 3 days ago I got an out of the blue phone call... "Can you shoot a 3D Cinema Commercial for us with your F3 in 2 days time?". So yesterday I was out shooting a big budget 3d commercial with a pair of F3's recording on my trusty Nano3D. I would have loved to have shot this recording on to the Gemini as we were doing a lot of overcranking and 1080 60P would have been preferable. For the standard speed stuff, for a cinema commercial 10 bit would have been very nice too. So while 8 bit is often sufficient, 10 bit is very nice to have.
I could have also done with that bright LCD, we were lighting on a bright sunny day with 3 x 18kw lamps as some shots were done with Phantom HD Golds running at 1000fps and my monitor was a job to see even with a sun shade.
There's a thread about the shoot here:
