Sneak your smartphone in with you. Some hospitals are pretty lenient about patients using them. I wound up in the ICU a little over a year ago and my wife left my iPhone in the bedside table. Couple days after I woke up I managed to get it and start e-mailing. Nobody even yelled at me. YMMV!
