I have been looking at purchasing a Thecus 5 bay drive, now the question is if I go through a gigabit router will it be as fast as FW800?
Or is it better to get something with a FW800 interface, I know that there is the new apple interface but I need a reasonably quick solution and can't be bothered to wait till devices become available.

Get the FW drive. The ethernet will not really be fast enough for editing.

In reguards to Thunderbolt, I understand that Intel will not license it for aftermarket cards. It will only be available on new machines. That bites.

That bites. As I understand it this is not a question of refusing to licence the technology but simply that Thunderbolt boards cannot be added to existing computers by an expansion card as Thunderbolt chips need direct access to both the systems video and PCI express architectures.
