Hi all.

I know the question's been posed, and that there are no ideal solutions for under $1000, but I'm going to ask anyway.

Are there any 17"-20" LCD monitors that anyone here knows about/uses that has decent resolution and has reasonably accurate colors? I'm a videojournalist who would like to move from previewing on my Macbook Pro to a separate LCD.

However, I'll be taking the screen with me to Central America, and will need to lock it away in a safe fairly regularly as the town where I'll be living is pretty rife with break-ins (lovely I know). So small and cheap are vital.

If you are connecting it to your laptop, you probably have a VGA output from which to attach an external LCD monitor. So IPS and other higher end screens are probably not worth bothering with. A TN panel would be better with a VGA only input. I would recommend this one:

The only negative (and it's a negative for most LCD monitors these days) is that it is 16:9 instead of 16:10. that will crop down a lot of web pages and some apps. If that's a big problem, let me know and I'll look for a 16:10. There are pretty much fixed resolutions for given screen sizes, so for a 16:10 screen in the size range you are looking for, you will be looking for a monitor with a maximum screen resolution of 1440 x 900. The next 16:10 resolution (1680×1050) up from that starts at 20", but that may be too big for portable use and the limited choices may make you end up with a bad looking display. I would stick to 1440 x 900 or go with the 16:9 resolution of 1366 x 768.
