I have never used the print to tape function. I shoot mixed formats...HDV and HD with 2 different cams.

I always keep a "MASTER" tape of the HDV footage.

Although I have a master backup of the HD file-I am wondering if I can PRINT TO TAPE the original HD footage so I have a master copy on tape as well. Of course I want to do this without any quality loss.

Certainly. Just hook up your camera and go to Tools - Print to HDV tape.

afaik all sony tape based hdv / dv cameras can - that is, in australia. i read ages ago that some record function was disabled in the eu to avoid tax of some description.

that said, why would you want a 'master' on tape? i certainly keep all my camera footage (even when shooting cf), but can't see any point in creating a hdv master on tape. keeping the veg and a couple of m2t's on various hd's is, for my part, more than adequate.

I had a very bad thing hapen to me....I captured my videos to a hard drive from all 3 cams so I get 3 files for one project-A GL2 Folder, A HV30 Folder, and a HF200 folder (HD via SD card) The Hard Drives were in a Raid 1 config. So my thinking was I have the original tapes from 2 cams and 2 copies each on hard drives...Right???

Well one of my hard drives died, (a 1TB Seagate) so the raid software informed me of this-in the process of replacing the failed drive i accidently knocked the other drive onto the hard concrete floor.

It took me days to recapture the footage from the GL2 and The HDV tapes, but at least I still had it. If someone has a simplier backup workflow...PLEASE share with me!!

So what I would like to do is have a 3 tape backup for every important project. In the future perhaps I will have 2 tapes and a Blu Ray. 2011 is the year to build another editig PC, but thats another thread!

Grazie, you can do a Print to HDV Tape to and HDV camera set to HDV mode. You can also do a Print to DV Tape to any DV camera or HDV camera set to DV mode. Either should work fine.

So i take it everything has to be on the timeline first before it will work?

David, yes - you would finish your edit and then go to the print to tape option you need. That will put whatever is on the timeline onto tape.

when i did hdv to tape i usually rendered out the tl to a compliant m2t. i found that print to tape is VERY, VERY fussy - it has to be totally compliant!
