View Full Version : T2i Recording Device
Oliver Darden December 7th, 2010, 02:02 PM I have a T2i and was wondering what everyone uses to record audio. I don't necessary want to do XLR to 1/8 into the camera unless I have to. Is there a separate recording device that anyone can recommend? I use an Audio-Technica AT4073a shotgun mic and want to capture professional audio.
David W. Jones December 7th, 2010, 02:12 PM I use a Sound Devices 302 mixer feeding a Zoom H4N.
Chris Barcellos December 7th, 2010, 02:20 PM I use a Sign Video Eng44 mixing to a Zoom H1 or a Tascam DR 07. Synch up the footage using Dual Eyes or Plural Eyes
Oliver Darden December 7th, 2010, 02:53 PM Thanks for the reply guys.
Why do I need an external mixer if the Zoom H4N has balanced XLR inputs? Is this just for phantom power?
Jef Gibbons December 7th, 2010, 03:05 PM Hey Oliver, the Zoom has phantom power too, so unless you need more than 2 mics you're good to go with it.
Oliver Darden December 7th, 2010, 03:11 PM Cool, thanks Jef.
I've never heard of Zoom (except for effects) before, is this what everyone's using in a professional setting these days? If price were not an issue would this still be the recording device to get?
John Vincent December 7th, 2010, 07:33 PM Yeah, the Zoom's pretty much the best bang for the buck. I know Phil Bloom uses one...
Jon Fairhurst December 7th, 2010, 07:44 PM There is also the Tascam DR-100 to consider. As well as a juicedLink preamp into a camera (5D2 or T2i) running Magic Lantern firmware.

(Wow. The first video has nearly 25,000 views!)
Chris Barcellos December 7th, 2010, 11:57 PM Hey Jon, have you run any tests with the T2i Magic Lantern. Just wondering how you think it compares with 5D version. Will be good if they can get a menu system on the camera.

If price were not an issue, then I would get either an SD 702 or SD 702T if you need timecode.
While units like the H4N offer great bang for the buck, they lack the features and performance in certain areas contained in the professional units costing much more. That is why many of us add professional mixers to the audio chain which have high end Mic Pres, quiet phantom power, high quality built-in limiters, and professional metering & monitoring. Features that an H4N just can't provide at such a low price point.
Good Luck!

Hi Chris, I don't own a T2i, so I haven't tested ML or followed the development closely.
Oliver Darden December 11th, 2010, 10:23 AM Perfect, thanks for all the great info guys
