View Full Version : Can I get rid of this distortion in the background?

Looks like the old morie effect. There was a screen that acted as an ND of sorts but unfortunately it wreaked havoc as well. You can see where the screen ends and the field is clear in the background. Any tricks to deal with this? We shot this in standard 60i mode on the DVX.

You don't say what software you're using... FCP has a motion blur effect (click on the Motion tab in the clip viewer and check the Motion Blur box, you can also fiddle with the settings there). Sometimes it helps with this sort of thing. I shot a brief sequence with a little model helicopter in front of my plasma TV (low tech but actually looked surprisingly good :-) and I had a similar problem. Adding motion blur improved it a lot.

Hey Steve,

Yes, these nets can be troublesome. The trick for using them is very simple. Just place them far enough back so they are not in the focus plane of the talent. Add some shutter to soften the background and you should be fine in the future.

Hope this helps,

Stephanie

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.

are u shooting interlaced or progressive?
If interlaced, thsi will flicker to buggery so turn on reduce interlace flicker..
another option in editing is to run a chroma blur (like the one youd use for chroma keying) this will soften the lines..
another option is to run a gradient mask overlay to slightly lighten or darken the area to hide the fine mess.. hide it a bit.. this may not work well though... times like these u need a chroma screen :)

particle illusion, afer effects and combustion (and others like them) allow yo uto draw a mask or "block" out the talent.. from here, you throw on a blur but as your talent is "blocked" or masked, theyre not affected by the effect...
this can also simulate DOF for artsy fartsy stuff, but in your case, tracking all those frames as these guys babble on will be very tedius..
