View Full Version : UWOL 18 Tales of Wonder & Woe
Trond Saetre November 18th, 2010, 02:36 AM Looking forward to see yours, Bill. I'm about done editing mine.
But something is missing: Any kind of living creatures (except those walking on two legs) would be a good thing to add to my entry.
Oh well, at least not the dreadful shark tank for me this round.
Mick Jenner November 18th, 2010, 02:57 AM Help Required
Although I have lurked here a long time this is my first entry. Could somebody please explain how I gain entry to the vault. Where do I find the user name and password or how do I create one. I am probably missing something somewhere.
After a lot of interruptions I have now manged to produce something, not as first planned and maybe a little disjointed, but never the less I have an entry!
Mick
Mick Jenner November 18th, 2010, 03:20 AM Ah,
Have re read Cat's E-mail and see she is going to e-mail the details of the the password etc.
Bills post confussed me as he says he has uploaded. So in case I have not got the latest e-mail with the upload password etc could you please send it to me.
Mick
Mat Thompson November 18th, 2010, 04:56 AM Mick - I wish our system were robust enough for uploaded films to automatically be added to the vault. Alas it is a manual process! I havent changed the upload password for a while but Cat/Meryem email it out each time as a matter of course.
Looking forward to seeing your work. I have a one hour window with my character over lunch to finish up my piece....we will see :-/ !
Mick Jenner November 18th, 2010, 05:26 AM Thanks Trond and Mat for you e-mails and reply here
I will now attempt to upload
Mick
Mick Jenner November 18th, 2010, 06:19 AM Again many thanks to all, upload completed (I think!)

Per Johan Naesje November 18th, 2010, 06:38 AM Are you guys finished already! I´m still out in the woods trying to accomplish something. Today -10 C, very freezing temperature, fingers and battery drained rather quickly.
Got 3 minutes of usable footage in 4 hours wait in the hide. I´m now back home trying to warm up.
Good thing is that I will be able to edit something of the footage I got so far. But I still lack the good story, hopefully I will get some idea in the next days.
Planning to upload Sunday afternoon.
Catherine Russell November 18th, 2010, 09:43 AM Hi everyone:
A flurry of activity I see! Splendid! Check your e-mails for the user name and password information. I've just sent it out.
Mick, you were confused by Bill already uploading because he has played before and as Mat said, the password hasn't changed so Bill already had the information.
Thanks Mat for stepping in and sending this info out to people that needed it. I appreciate it!
I'm thrilled for everyone. I can't wait to see what you have worked up this time. I'm glad on the whole, most of you seem to be having fun with it.
Any problems on the upload Mat and Kevin are the go-to people for this so pipe up. Let's starve these sharks this time.

Kevin Railsback November 18th, 2010, 10:32 AM I'm going to do a quick and dirty list of uploads here in a bit. Have to take a hike here in Half Moon Bay to see if I can get some footage for my own entry.
Bill Thesken November 18th, 2010, 10:42 AM Mick, sorry for the confusion, I've never finished anything early before and had to toot my horn.
Looking forward to seeing the films from around the globe.
Dale Guthormsen November 19th, 2010, 06:31 PM Good evening,
did not think I was going to make this one. Missing a bunch of hoped for footage, but in the end I got something wrapped somewhat close to my original idea. It was either falconry stuff or wildlife and I figured you all would prefer the wildlife footage. Hope it compresses and downloads nicely Rendering as I write).

Mike Duvall November 19th, 2010, 07:58 PM I look forward to seeing the films this round. I'll give no excuses other than:
1. I forgot (not really)
2. I have no macro lens : )
3. It has rained a lot and getting too cold to shoot
4. I have been too busy interviewing suits for a corporate video
5. My dog ate it
Honestly I never even got a start on this and knowing what my schedule was going to be I shouldn't have even signed up. But I was hopeful.
Good luck to all those that complete the challenge and hope to see you next time.
Per Johan Naesje November 20th, 2010, 01:12 AM Mike, sorry to hear that you didn´t get the time! Maybe next round?
Dale, good the hear that you managed to get something, I always like to watch your films.
I´m doing well myself, have to go out for some hours today and get the last bits in the puzzle...
Chris Barcellos November 20th, 2010, 01:14 AM After missing a couple of these, I got one in this time..
Per Johan Naesje November 20th, 2010, 01:22 AM Chris, that´s splendid to hear, looking forward to watch it!
Catherine Russell November 20th, 2010, 12:10 PM Oh Mike! I'm sorry to hear this. We look forward to your entry next time.
As the first to admit they won't be submitting by the deadline, you get the honorary job of posting the shark tank thread and....(shudder) diving in!
As far as the excuses, option 5 was the best :)

Kevin Railsback November 20th, 2010, 04:42 PM Just realized that entries are due tomorrow. I guess I better get on it! Traveling most of tomorrow so hopefully I'll find some time to put stuff together.
Still not sure how it's all going to fit or if it even will but we'll see.
Per Johan Naesje November 20th, 2010, 10:30 PM Well, today is due-day and I´ve not started to edit yet. And I still missing some more footage, to build the story. Hmmm... looks like a Sunday with lots of work to do.
Good luck to you all. Can´t wait to watch all the films :-)
Trond Saetre November 21st, 2010, 05:16 AM Mike, sorry to hear you didn't make it.
Come back for the next round! Stay with us!!
Mike Sims November 21st, 2010, 07:42 AM I had given up on finishing, but if Bill was able to finish in only 15 hours and Kevin and Per Johan are editing today, well... let's see if I can come up with something! I'm going to start completely over from scratch. Fingers crossed.
Per Johan Naesje November 21st, 2010, 08:29 AM Hi Mike,
according to the world clock (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/full.html?sort=2), it still plenty of time left! As we speak 18.5 hours more to go. I´m still in the editing process, and I will not be finished until midnight local time at least 8-9 more hours!
So come on Mike, lets do it...
Mike Sims November 21st, 2010, 09:03 AM Thanks for the world clock link. I bookmarked it, but I couldn't find a listing for "anywhere in the world"!!!
Per Johan Naesje November 21st, 2010, 09:12 AM Well the site in the links list places in descending order. I believe Midway in the Pacific is the place which is passing the timeline or dateline latest in the world. You can edit and upload until this place is passing Sunday 23.59!
Catherine Russell November 21st, 2010, 03:35 PM Wow Per:
I actually never interpreted "midnight anywhere in the world" like that, but I like your interpretation. I took it to mean midnight for "you" the individual player in your own time zone. If your interpretation squeezes a few more hours in for somebody, then so be it!
Hang in there everyone. I can feel the heat. I'm starting to sweat myself and I'm not even submitting!
Cat
Rich Ryan November 21st, 2010, 03:56 PM Fortunately I did not need to use Per's world clock this round. I managed to get something put together and uploaded in spite of a bad couple of weeks at work and a head cold. I'm not really happy with my entry since I was not able to get some of the shots that I wanted, but at least I avoided "swimming with the fishes."
I look forward to seeing the rest of your entries.
Kevin - I live about 40 miles east of Half Moon Bay so I know what the weather was like this weekend. I hope you did not get too wet (-:
Of course now that it's Sunday and I have uploaded my video the sun has come out and it's a beautiful afternoon.
Kevin Railsback November 21st, 2010, 04:19 PM But now it's raining again. :)
Per Johan Naesje November 21st, 2010, 05:24 PM Cat, ho ho ho my little squeeze to get some more hours :-)
Well, I´m finished editing, rendering as I speak. Had to open a bottle of VSOP Cocnac, this is my first entry for over a year. Cheers everybody!
Steve Siegel November 21st, 2010, 06:07 PM Now, that's the stuff, Per.
I don't have any Cognac handy, but I'll join you with a bottle Moose Drool beer from Jackson, Wyoming.
Per Johan Naesje November 21st, 2010, 06:12 PM Nice Steve, I´m finished uploading. Think I need one more Cocnac before bedtime :-)
In Norway we say - one Cocnac in every leg, so this must be three for me... ...sorry Cat, this was a bit nasty ;-)
Mike Sims November 21st, 2010, 06:40 PM Thanks for that. Now I can legitimately use the phrase rolling on the floor laughing! I’m now rendering. And rendering. And rendering. And rendering…
Catherine Russell November 21st, 2010, 07:53 PM Thanks Per for that one. Personally I never understood why I couldn't ever handle more than two glasses of cognac... now I finally know. Just know that we are THRILLED to have you back with us after such a long time!
Keep at it Mike! Still lots of time!
Looking forward to everyone's entry! I'm sensing some really good ones in the making.

Mike Sims November 22nd, 2010, 12:04 AM I’ve always interpreted the deadline like Per Johan did- midnight at the International Dateline. I was just joking about the awkward way the rule is worded.
Well, I managed to finish a video! It’s not the one I would have wanted to make (five months after paying for it I’m still waiting for a part backordered by the manufacturer). It’s not the one I started out to do. (That one was on the scale of human perception and would have featured shots of the same organism from ten kilometers to one one-hundredth of a millimeter and been titled “Ten Orders of Magnitude”. I was unable to get all the shots for it after some unexpected work came my way.) Still, it’s a finished video and now uploaded before deadline. I didn’t break Bill’s fifteen hour record (nor my camera and I sure hope Bill’s is going to be OK) but, because I rushed it, I made more than a few mistakes. It should be titled “One Day Wonder”- but it isn’t! After rendering eleven times I finally got a file that plays (it doesn’t look so good in places) but is 60.5 Mb. I know others have gotten permission for being a fraction of a megabyte over in the past, so I’m hoping Cat will allow it. If I had more time I’m sure I could have eventually gotten a file below 60 Mb that actually played without error. Oh, well…
The title is in Greek, but the uploader kept crashing with Greek characters in the file name. I anglicized the file name and it went right up. What a bore.
P.S. Someone keep reminding me to never again write a tongue-twister for voice over.
Markus Nord November 22nd, 2010, 12:07 AM Hello everyone...
I got a film together and uploaded last night... It become 61 mb, but the computer I was editigt on was so slow that it took nerly 1 hour to export the 3 min film. And after 6 miss exportings I was out of time and energy. I hope it's ok...
Well, I'm happy that I finished... Haven't finish an entry in a long time... This time not that much UW, but some shot.
Cheers!
Meryem Ersoz November 24th, 2010, 10:42 AM I’ve always interpreted the deadline like Per Johan did- midnight at the International Dateline. I was just joking about the awkward way the rule is worded.
I always interpreted the rule to mean: you look at the clock in your house, wherever you are in the world, and when it reads midnight, that is your deadline.
it's all honor code anyway, because the contest coordinator wakes up, drinks a little coffee, ponders the day, checks email, looks to see if Kevin has checked the uploads, yawns, feeds the dog, and then looks at the number of finishers...if you slip it in before all that happens, you are the only one who will ever know.
Per Johan Naesje November 24th, 2010, 11:18 AM Meryem & Cat, I stand corrected, sorry for misleading the community! Happy that I managed to get my entry uploaded, even if it was + 2 hours of deadline (local time)
Meryem Ersoz November 24th, 2010, 02:00 PM in theory, Per, I suppose your interpretation is the correct one...in practice, I suppose the practical deadline is the morning after midnight, Mountain Standard Time, since Cat and I both live in the same time zone...and I have a dog to feed and she has goats...
...the fun part of coordinating a contest with such a far reach is knowing that we are doing things at radically different times of the day and night and still have it all happen in one place. right here...
Catherine Russell November 24th, 2010, 08:49 PM Make that.....
WAY in the morning after the deadline (MST). I not only have goats, but a cat, donkeys, MANY chickens, ducks, geese and a Guinea fowl.... not to mention any one that needs special attention at the moment (right now it's two chickens: Nikki and Cloe). You would think my husband would be in here somewhere as well, but alas, he is up and out way before the sun rises, always starting my day by handing me a cup of coffee before he heads out before I can even crack and eye.
So when Meryem said you were in good hands...
Dale Guthormsen November 26th, 2010, 09:10 AM CAt,
If you moved north you could sleep in even longer before sunrise!!!! Doesn't sound so early that way!!
Catherine Russell November 26th, 2010, 12:11 PM Now there's a thought, Dale!
Markus Nord November 26th, 2010, 01:05 PM ...But if you move to much north, the sun never sets... ;)
